I don´t have any trouble with mp3 or my videos but I just can´t listen to any cds. I tried Gnome cd player and Xmms with the Cd Audio Player plugin but both of them don´t play anything and don´t give any errors. Can someone help me? |

Do you have the CD-Audio cable connected from your CD-ROM to your Audio device (sound card or motherboard usually)?

Since most systems ship with windows xp these days and it reads digital audio off the cd's (it doesn't use the analogue audio cable) a lot of systems don't ship with audio cables anymore. This is a good thing since the analogue cable degrades sound quality.
If this is why you're not getting sound emerge xmms-cdread and then digital audio will work fine in xmms. |

I had this same problem and it wasn't the cable (which was connected). It was that I had the emu10k1 driver conflicting with the emu10k1 kernel module. |

I think I don´t have that cable (I can´t open my pc) so I will try to emerge xmms-cdread. Thanks again for the help. |

FWIW another workaround is to use KDE's Konqueror which can browse audio CDs like XMMS-CDREAD. But it sounds like you use Gnome?... |

The main difference in quality comes from the fact that it's another D/A converter. And who knows what xp adds? I'll take the analogue cable any day. _________________ Excelsior! |
