MPlayer: Subtitles not showing properly

I'm trying to watch "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" from the DVD (I know it isn't worth watching, but I'm going for the marathon once I get this sorted), and using mplayer, the subtitles are not behaving properly.

Using xine, normally the subtitles are not shown except at certain scenes when different languages are spoken (like chapter 14).

Using mplayer I can only get it to display either all of the subtitles or none of them. I figured the DVD is using forced subtitles, but using the option -forcedsubsonly, it ends up with no subtitles being displayed ever.

Any ideas on things to try with this one? Other than using xine of course.

Not really what I was after, but cheers anywho.

Any ideas on getting mplayer to behave?
