Do you have all the applications set to use your sound system? ie. if you use ALSA do you have all the applications set to use ALSA as well?
Do the applications see the mic but just can't get any sound from it or do they not see the mic at all?
Did you try using the mic boost? There are sometimes other mic related settings that can affect it in the mixer, it depends on which sound card you have. I suggest emergeing aumix and seeing if there is a "hidden" mic setting that your normal mixer isn't seeing. _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

Thanks,
As I said, the mic works, I can listen to my own voice when I speak,
How do I configure applications to "see" the mic??
or
How to get all the applications set to use ALSA?
thanks _________________ JESUS is the LORD |

Run alsamixer in console, and if you don't have it, emerge alsa-utils. Go into the playback "tab" and mute mic. Go into the capture tab, I think f4 and hit space on Mic and space on capture until L R Captur is red under both Mic and Capture. make sure you turn up the volume using the up arrows. |

I would just like to thank you for writing the first howto (all 3 sentences) that helped me get my mic working for the first time after using Linux for over 5 years. |

Hi
I have similar problems with skype: microphone is not working (tried with the "echo123" user).
I tried alsamixer (and also kmix from KDE).
mic and capture are set for input, but no sound is recorded...
indeed mic works fine with skype under Debian...
any clue please?
thanks in advance |

Hello,
Please check that the "Full Duplex" is activated in your kde sound settings.
On my kde it's : (french version):
Centre de configuration KDE -> Son et multimédia -> Système de son -> Matériel -> Full Duplex.

right! With Full Duplex it's working now!
it's quite strange since in Debian this wasn't necessary...
thanks a lot! |

Hello, first of all, thanks a lot. My microphone is working now and I can record sound in krec. However, my skype can't take any voice from me.
Here is what I did:
I enabled the full duplex thing.
I did the alsamixer settings, but I had also to disable the "IEC958" in the capture tab in order to get my microphone working in krec.
I have an Asus AN8-SLI deluxe motherboard, just for record.
Does anyone know why skype isn't recording any sound while krec is ?
Thanks a lot.

Ive been trying to get my mic to work from the above info and have been using arecord -D plughw:0,0 RecTest.wav
and aplay RecTest.wav to test it. At the moment I am getting sound recorded but it is echoing.
Would anyone know of how to stop the echoing. Im using a headset and have a NFORCE4 motherboard with onboard audio (intel0x8)

To avoid the echo, it "should" be enough to mute the monitor ( a setting with a mic under alsamixer with my intel 8x0) _________________ Unreleased Kollektiv

Hi folks! As it was previously said, the problem comes from using kmix. Using alsamixer as described by ElSenorPantelone solved the mic issue in skype for me. |

Hmmm I try to use alsamixer, but in Cature-Mode under "Mic" and "Capture" is a red written L R CAPTURE. I CAN'T put the volume up at "Mic"... I can do this at "Capture". Mic is working (I hear my voice over the speakers), but Skype and Krec are not using the mic. |

Thanks from me too! I think some default setting was at fault in making alsa not work. |

Hi guys,
Thanks for the tip! My krec records perfect now, I dont have the echo when I speak and I get to use skype :)
BUT, I cant edit my wav files in audacity. I dont get any sound. I need to edit the audio tracks using audacity.
Does any of you know what might be wrong? What kind of info would help to find a solution?
Thank you all again. |

In addition to everything that was written before, I also had to:
Adjust Analog Mix and Analog Mix Capture to 80% (alsamixer)
Adjust the Sound devices like that:
Options > Sound devices > Sound In: Audigy1 [SB0090] (hw:Audigy,2)
Options > Sound devices > Sound Out: Audigy1 [SB0090] (hw:Audigy,0)
Options > Sound devices > Ringing: Audigy1 [SB0090] (hw:Audigy,0)
And then all of a sudden Skype worked _________________ There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who unterstand binary and those who don't. |
