Okay, I would like to set a widescreen resolution on a standard monitor. But it isn't working! I have a 17" CRT that I would like to use 1280 x 800.

Most likely by adding the correct sync values for your monitor to the monitor config section.

find out the values for the model of your monitor and edit the section to read like this:

Do NOT use the values I give here. You have to use those that fit your monitor!

If after this you still have problems, please post /var/log/xorg.0.log here.

Still need help, please!

My monitor is stuck at 1440 x 1024, which is not recommended for this monitor. It is less than a year old; I would hate to see it go bad.
