|

Something strange I only just noticed! If I have Xmms playing an Mp3, and I drag a window to move it, after 5 secs or so of moving, the music stops! (i.e. dont let go of the window)
Insignificant I know! But does it happen to anyone else? A bug in either app perhaps?!

That has always bugged me too. I have a 933MHZ PIII w/ 512MB RAM, SBLive platinum 5.1 blah blah card (using alsa), and an NVidia Geforce2MX 64MB using the NVidia drivers and GLX.
I have seen similar problems in the past that could be prevented by turning off opaque window dragging options in the window manager... but mine seems to do it always now

hah!! It wont be down to my computer!! Its an Athlon XP1800+ with 512Mb Ram. GeForce4 64Mb. So if that cant play a small MP3 without skipping.....
Actually, its not happening this morning now that I check.
Its not really a problem anyway, it never happens to me under normal usage anyway. Only if I give a window a good 5 second dragging session!

When you drag non-opaque windows in fluxbox, the desktop refresh is stopped. Resizing /or/ using opaque windows does not interrupt the desktop refresh.
XMMS is an X application and doesn't like not being able to update its window.
It's been discussed on IRC and probably elsewhere. Basically, don't worry about it and give xmms a larger buffer (somewhere in preferences->mp3 module).
You can see its behaviour more easily by running gkrellm. |

I just ran into this same issue on my gentoo installation.
Unfortunately I havent found a way to fix it nor have I found an attest to a viable solution to the problem so in reaction I turned to my (luckily pre-emerged) Zinf installation and no-sweat.
Not only did this fix my problem with moving/resizing windows while playing audio of ogg/mp3 in XMMS, but it also vaporized the skips that would occur during the ripping and encoding of a cd using Grip.
Thank you Zinf. |

From the Fluxbox website FAQ's :
Quote: | Why does my application (e.g. xmms, mplayer) pause when I move a window?
This behaviour is not a bug. It occurs because of the nature of outline window moving.
Long version:
Outline moving works by drawing a rectangle of inverted pixels around a window. When you move the mouse, the old rectange is erased (by inverting the pixels again) and a new one drawn. Fluxbox grabs the display to freeze all the applications display windows. If it doesn't to this, then window changes can occur which change bits of the rectangles, ultimately leaving sections of rectangle randomly around the screen.
All window managers that offer outline moving need to enforce the same rule so that the display doesn't become messy with rectange fragments during or after the move operation. If you find one that doesn't let us know
The author believes that applications such as xmms whose primary function is not graphical ought to be able to continue to operate without the display updating (mplayer has a good excuse to pause). However, this behaviour is not under the control of the Fluxbox developers - you should talk to XMMS people to see if they can make it continue playing even without display updates (though I imagine this may also be a difficult problem). |
So it sounds like it's not a fluxbox problem but a XMMS or other media player problem. |

You can easily fix it by increasing the buffer size in the plugin options for MP3 and Ogg Vorbis. |

Which plugin are you using? OSS emulation or ALSA? I found
that this was a problem only with the native ALSA one. |

xmms works fine but mplayer pauses while a window is being dragged here (KDE3.2/OSS) _________________ "There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact, they're all dark." - PF |

I tried switching the output plugin from oss to esound and noticed that there is a longer delay between when I start to resize/move a window to the time when XMMS stops playing audio.
The delay is probably long enough that I will never run into it. I still like that when I use Zinf there is never a pause in the music.
Akso, switching over to the esound output plugin eliminated the skips I would sometimes encounter when ripping cd's in Grip and listening to music in XMMS.
The system I am on now (which is the system where I noticed and was able to "repair" the problem) has an AMD AthlonXP 1700+ with 512mb of RAM and an ATI Radeon 7000 agp card. I have enlightenment and fluxbox installed at the moment. No matter which window manager I am using, the problem is the same. I believe this would be the case for any window manager. My uncle has blackbox on his machine and it behaves identical to mine.
Hopefully this helps. |
