I've been following the gentoo ALSA guide at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml and I got to the point where I needed to unmute the main channels with no errors. But now, I've discovered that I don't have any of the right channels. I don't have Master or PCM, nor do I have Center, Surround or Headphone. What I do have is two sections called "AC97 Mic", Analog C, Analog F, Analog R, Analog U, Capture, SPDIF Ce, SPDIF FR, SPDIF Ou, SPDIF Re and SPDIF Un. I don't really know what to do with any of these.

I'm using the 2.6.11 kernel with no alsa or oss support built in (I tried that and it didn't seem to work). My soundcard is a SoundBlaster Audigy LS, and is recognized by lspci. One thing I think I should mention is that I also have the soundcard that is built into the nforce2 chipset, but I don't want to use it. Could ignoring this soundcard be what is causing my problems?

Did you actually disable the onboard sound in the bios? If you haven't, it's possible that it's interfering now.

The command line utility alsamixer will tell you what sound card it thinks it's running at the top. The chipset is usually the important thing.

The usual setup for alsa is to enable sound support as a module in the kernel, then to either enable alsa modules in the kernel or compile the modules separately with alsa-drivers. You're right in that the support can't be "built in."

You should try experimenting with muting and unmuting the different channels, in case one of them is actually what you want. However, why don't you list the output of /sbin/lsmod, as well as your config file in /etc/modules.d/alsa?

Alsa 1.0.8 in kernel or as package is faulty together with emu10k1/2. Do that help https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2450249.html#2450249 ?
