Hello folks,
this sounds like a FAQ, but I haven't been able to find some good info on this (neither by searching through the forum nor with Google):
I have an ATI radeon card working with Xfree 4.3 and fglrx. To watch videos on my TV set, I'm looking for some infos on how to set this up.
TV out is already working in clone mode, however it's not quite usable because of the large virtual desktop.
Is there any way to either set the resolution of the TV head directly or to specify the size of the virtual desktop for the TV out?
Some keywords for the search function would be sufficient TIA! |

open a term on your main desktop.
export DISPLAY=:0.1
mplayer -fs /path/to/fave/pron
Will do the trick, although, having JUST gone to a radeon I am having probs getting video's fullscreen with any output but gl2
mplayer -fs -vo gl2 /path/to/wholesome/gospel/video |

Are you using the fglrx driver?
If I set the display variable as you suggested, mplayer complains that it cannot open this display.
vo: couldn't open the X11 display (:0.1)!
Can you please post the part of your XF86Config-4 that configures the Radeon card? |

For setting the virtual desktop:
Do u want this at all? It sounds like you're trying to get rid of it. Either way, the easiest place I know of that you can specify virtual desktop settings is thru running fglrxconfig. If what you're trying to do is have different virtual desktop settings between monitor and tv, I don't think you can do that in clone mode (however I recommend staying w/clone mode).
However, I have a Radeon running fglrx drivers, and was trying to get video to run fullscreen on both monitor and TV. Best solution I came up with is
1) making sure u have things working such that OpenGL is accelerated,
2) Make sure you have mplayer compiled with opengl and gl2 USE flags (I think opengl is the one that makes it create the gl2 driver, I forget),
3) emerge xmms-xmmsmplayer and configure that plugin from xmms. Set it to use gl2, and if you want the videos to always play fullscreen, put '-fs' in the command bar.
Then you can play videos on both monitor and TV thru XMMS.
I say all this w/ gl2 because I don't think xv can do two screens at once (due to video overlay) and I have had no luck getting xv to work with the TV being the primary monitor (even when it's the only one active!)
I know you might already know this part, but I'm putting it in for completeness:
To make sure you're running OpenGL accelerated, run 'glxinfo', and look for the line that says: 'direct rendering: ' If it says No, do a forum search for 'opengl ati' for more info. |

Yeah I'm using the flglx driver, and like COTB said, just run the config tool and let it do things for you. I have 2 distinct windowmaker sessions on my 2 screens ( only one I use) I dunno if this is peculiar to winowmaker, but I believe I have the screens set to clone.
Only gotcha I can think of, is that you should look in the XFConfig-4 that will be created for you, and make sure it really did put the right modes in for the TV. |
