I have just installed Gentoo from a stage 1, following (I believe) the install guide's instructions down to the letter, and after emerging Xorg, which as near as I can tell went fine, I type Xorg. The screen turns black, then flickers and switches back to the console. I check my Xorg.0.log file as instructed. The contents of the file were as follows:

It may be useful to note that I have an ATi All-In-Wonder Radeon, but it is detected as a Radeon 7200. I do not know what this framebuffer error is about, but I tried recompiling my kernel without anything relating to framebuffer support, and still got errors.
Luckily, I was able to emerge ftp and upload the log file to a server, then boot into Windows and post this message, but I'd like to get Gentoo and Xorg running, because it has several applications that windows just doesn't have a good equivalent for.
I am at a loss on what to do now, does anyone understand the log file and my problem? I would be very grateful if you could help me with this. |

Yes, and at first, I had all the framebuffer related options activated, in case I ever wanted to run links -g in the framebuffer, and Xorg didn't work with those options activated, so I turned them off, and it still did not work. |

I just completed a stage 1 install also, and emerged fluxbox last night. X11 and XOrg were installed with it. However, the xserver refuses to start. I got the same error that StormShaman got, except my video card is onboard (intel 810). Here is my log:

I really hate display problems, I dont have a good enough understanding of display servers to even begin to troubleshoot them. I'd appreciate some help. Please explain what's causing the problem and why its a problem. Much appreciated. Thank you.

| Solution for me was to simply copy the XF86Config-4 created by using fglrxconfig to just XF86Config. Appears x.org will look for the XF config but not with the -4. |

Try running 'xorgconfig' as root. It's pretty much the same as xf86config, but for XOrg. It should generate a xorg.conf file. |

| It's too bad you decided to switch away from gentoo - i have an i810 onboard too and Gentoo works beautifully. Let me know and I can post my xorg.conf file if you're still trying to get it working. |
