Does anyone here have an aureal card? I've just remembered I have one knocking around.
Its an Aureal Vortex 2 (8830) I believe it suports 4.1 or 5.1 I stopped using it since I changed to Windows2000 and then WindowsXP as Aureal went bust when creative arse rapped them and bought them out to get hold of the superior A3D codecs.
Anyway anyone know what the ALSA supports like with this card? I've looked at the alsa projects web site and it says that it supports hardware mixing which is cool.
Plus how do I make it work with the nforce2 soundcard? or can I just disable it? and if so how? |

I have an aureal8820 card, and in kernel 2.4.x with the latest ALSA it seems to work just fine! I've yet to have any success with the 2.6.x kernels though - but I assume that is my fault. |

AFAIK the vortex card is fully supported by alsa, even the gameport can be made to work.
I'm a musician and deeply regret giving away my Vortex when I went from 98 to XP. Even my 200 dollar Audigy can't give me the superb Bass Guitar sound the $20 (bargain bin) Vortex did.

It does work, but I had horrific problems with it randomly changing the sample rate. I would play a few MP3s/FLACs and the sound would suddenly speed up and go all high-pitched in XMMS.
Xine engine programs also had the same problem, very stuttery sound. Mplayer didn't seem to suffer as often, if at all.
Apart from that, the sound quality was WAY above my onboard VIA, and the hardware mixing worked great. Maybe it will be fixed in the next few releases. |
