Can't get audio to work

I just built linux 2.6.3 with ALSA and the correct audio driver. After rebooting I started KDE, but I didn't hear any sounds? XMMS couldn't play anything either.

I didn't have audio set up in the previous kernel!

Do I need to setup something to get audio working?

The aRts Status says that "Artsd should run with realtime scheduling", could tjis be the problem? The aRts sound daemon gets suspended?

I haven't set up sound before, so I have NO CLUE...
