Well, I have about 80 gigs of FLAC's over here and I want to play them with XMMS.

The FLAC plugin has been installed correctly.
But when I open XMMS, it just says
/usr/lib/xmms/Input/libxmms-flac.so: undefined symbol: FLAC__plugin_common__init_dither_context
and I can't use the FLAC input plugin, it doesn't even apper in the "Input plugins" list.

I have a 64bit gentoo on x86_64 and everything is built with gcc 3.4.

Does anyone of you have an idea how to solve this problem?

Is nobody able to help me?

I know it's a pretty odd error but I would be surprised if all the gurus here had no idea how to solve this

Did you install the plugin manually or did you let portage do it?

If you compile XMMS with "flac" as a use flag, it will compile and install the flac plugin automagically and it will appear in the "input plugins" list.

I've never had a problem with flac and xmms and I'm using the latest versions in portage.

I reckon its a GCC 3.4 specific problem.

I'm getting the same problem, for now I'm using Kde's Juk, but I prefer xmms. Anyone have a solution, I've tried some different versions of the plugin, including one from my mandrake install and it still gets this same error.

gcc 3.3.3 here.

I have flac in my use flags, I've tried linking the libxmms-flac.a to libxmms-flac.so and I then get the error.
libxmms.flac.so Invalid ELF header
This is getting very annoying, I've run out of ideas.

Here is the problem,
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-pkg/2003/08/20/0003.html
The best solution untill this bug is fixed is to use an older flac plugin. I just grabbed the 1.03 code from sourceforge and compiled/installed it by hand. XMMS is now finally working correctly! I'm not sure if the FLAC people are aware of this problem, maybe someone more experienced would like to drop them a line?

Well, on my machine emerge flac does not even build xmms-flac.so, it only builds xmms-flac.a and xmms-flac.la.
I have no clue, why, but it happens also if I compile it manually.
Without the .so-file, XMMS doesn'r give a damn about the FLAC plugin.
This also happens with the old FLAC 1.0.5beta2.

This whole thing just stinks

It's a shame that FLAC is such a great audio format but it's impossible to play it...

Just go to the flac project website and dowload a reaaallly old revision, like 1.0. They seem to work fine.
