  • Quote

Post by Massimo B. » Mon Mar 28, 2022 4:42 pm

I can't access my private messages anymore. I'm getting the following error message:
Could not update private message new/read status for user
I already logged out and logged in again.

Does that happen with

- privmsg.php?folder=inbox

immediately, or when you try to open a particular message or messages?

If so, can you try if these links do anything different?

- privmsg.php?folder=sentbox
- privmsg.php?folder=outbox
- privmsg.php?folder=savebox

Also, do you remember any of them being 100% full? (Not that that should matter.)
Kindest of regardses.

All those links are still leading to the same error message.
As far as I remember none of the boxes have been 100% full.
Just for the case it matters, I currently have 2 unread messages, but can't get there to read.

I have seen something like this happen in the distant past, but it was only about specific messages, not such a complete block off of the whole area.

I'll see if it can be healed on the database side.
Kindest of regardses.

Nice!

I found your "unread private message" number being set to 65534 for whatever reason, and the software would try to add 2 new messages to it (guessing here: https://gitweb.gentoo.org/proj/forums.g ... scvs#n2040).

With 'user_unread_privmsg' being an unsigned small int... yeah, that did not end well. :]
Kindest of regardses.

Just started getting the message "Could not update private message new/read status for user"

says I have 2 messages waiting
and doesn't matter which mailbox it is, inbox, sent, etc.

Thanks for any help on this.

Oh good. Just as I was wondering about this not being a wider-spread issue. It's almost like I can hear the seams creaking.

You had a 65534 as well. Maybe good now?

There was another case [1] where this number was 0 when it should not have been, so when the code tried to make it go below zero things wouldn't be happy... though I'm unsure if I managed to fix that yet.

That seems like a very odd bug. For a forum where PM's aren't an integral part of interaction, having problems at the 65534 end of the range is surprising. On pure messages along, that's 3855 messages per year for 17 years or 4681 for 14 years. Even when the forum experiences performance issues that still seems like a large number to reach due to inaccurate increments or decrements.

Yeah, would be really interesting to know what is causing it.

Possibly an underflow of sorts or something, as someone from infra pondered.

Not sure why me, I have the inbox at 30%-40% of full, never got full, not that much mail, I sent a pm 2 day ago, got an answer,
before that hadn't sent or received a pm in quite a while, then yesterday noticed it giving the weird message. *shrugs*

@Chiitoo,

Yeah, that makes sense. Hopefully it's resolved in the upgrade :)

Yeah. I've had mine full and got a lot of messages in all the different boxes so activity or/and volume doesn't seem to be an issue...

But yeah, I am actively poking infra to get us moving towards the upgrade again, which likely should stop this from happening!
Kindest of regardses.
