|
|
I have a (simple) desktop PC with GENTOO, using a GNOME desktop profile. This machine has been working perfectly for 2 years or so.
Yesterday evening everything was fine, I put the PC in "suspend", and when I used the PC this morning, the sound was no longer working.
I checked the Gentoo Wiki about pulseaudio https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PulseAudio
The GNOME sound settings and pavucontrol-qt only show the "Dummy Output". As in the Gentoo Wiki FAQ I checked for "other programs" but none were listed.
When I click on the "system sounds" in the GNOME sound settings, the "VU meter" shows the sound - but nothing is coming out of the speakers.

I already found that posting, and it didn't solve my problem.
Note: in I can select "Default (PulseAudio)" and "HDA Intel PCH". If I select "HDA Intel PCH", the "PCM" volume is at 100, but the green "OO" are not indicated. Apparently, ALSA thinks the channel is muted (?)
In there are three options for "output":
- all output devices
- hardware output devices
- virtual devices
If I select "hardware output devices", says "no devices found".
If I play some music in VLC, the VU Meter in the GNOME Sound Settings does show that the music is playing.....

Bump after one week of no activity.
Really, is there nobody who has some tips?
- I upgraded the kernel to 5.4.92-gentoo, but the problem persists
- journalctl gives one (possibly related) error:
Code: |
1月 30 09:24:17 sagittarius systemd[2172]: pulseaudio.service: Succeeded.
1月 30 09:24:17 sagittarius systemd[2172]: pulseaudio.service: Consumed 1.906s CPU time.

|
I checked several fora for similar errors, but the solution (downgrade ALSA) did not solve my problem.
Both pavucontrol-qt and the GNOME sound menu persistently only show the "Dummy Output" device.
Any help is appreciated. |

Well, I really can't help much, your setup is quadruple horror for my taste. (Gnome, systemd, PulseAudio, some bloated kernel.) However, it looks like the ALSA kernel module for your codec chip does not load. I can only guess why. Maybe it got damaged due to filesystem corruption. Or maybe it is a hardware issue and this chip gave up the ghost. If you boot from some liveCD, do you have sound?

ALSA is in kernel, how did you downgrade it? |

ALSA also has a user-space package. WvR may have downgraded that.
WvR: you can force English output by setting LC_MESSAGES=C before running the program. I do not have any particular insights to your problem. As for general advice, when you updated @world, which packages changed? I suggest stopping PulseAudio, getting sound working with plain ALSA, and then returning to use of PulseAudio. This may help you narrow down whether sound is completely broken or if PulseAudio is having a problem with some change. |

I use the following profile:
Code: |
sagittarius ~ # eselect profile list
Available profile symlink targets:
[...]
[7] default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/gnome/systemd (stable) *
[...]
|
I installed Gentoo about 2 years ago and at that time, I did not set any special USE-flags. Just a simple profile and gnome-light. I have not explicitly emerged pulseaudio, it was emerged as part of the profile settings, I guess.
Sound was working with kernel 5.4.80-gentoo-r1, no problem until a week ago. The only (obvious) change was Code: | media-libs/alsa-lib | , which was updated to v1.2.3.2-r1 early in January 2021. I downgraded all packages related to ALSA to v1.2.2 but the problem persists. I checked Code: | /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords | and Code: | /etc/portage/package.use | but none of the settings are related to sound.
Some more info:
Code: |
● pulseaudio.service - Sound Service

├─3912 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no
└─3913 /usr/libexec/pulse/gsettings-helper
|
no errors are indicated. Note: I can say:
Code: |
rooijen@sagittarius ~ $ systemctl --user stop pulseaudio
Warning: Stopping pulseaudio.service, but it can still be activated by:
pulseaudio.socket
|
but even then pulseaudio is still restarted automatically:
Code: |

PulseAudio is a layer between ALSA and sound application(s). As Hu already mentioned, PA will not work if ALSA is broken. What about chip codec I mentioned (kernel module). |

OK, perhaps a relevant part of the output from pa-info:

I have always used the snd_hda_intel module. It seems that there are very few "ALSA Device nodes", could that be the source of the problem? |

FWIW under KDE here sometimes my external USB speaker is muted suddenly and I have to go to the tab "Applications" here for the Volume systray applet (to the right of "Devices") and have to unmute it. |

This is the result, not cause. Your codec chip kernel module is not loaded as far as I can tell. Now it is the third time I'm saying this, and last. What's the point telling if no one is listening.
Did you investigate what module is required for your codec and why it is not loaded? No
Did you check if the hardware is OK with some liveCD? No
You keep running your PulseAudio tools which give you nothing because underlying ALSA is broken, do you listen people who tell you this? No
It is not rewarding to try and help you, not at all. |

How would one go about investigating the latter? Specially when built into the kernel? |

If it is built into kernel then one should look closely at hardware, considering it was working and stopped suddenly then it certainly looks like hardware failure. May also be CMOS corruption. Best diagnostics is always booting a known good live Linux, if this also does not work then your Gentoo is not at fault. But if it does then it offers you all information you need to set your sound (or anything else) up. It will have logs with successful hardware initialization, you can use various tools to look at configuration it created to make it work. Everything is right there, for you to look at, take notes and duplicate in your Gentoo.
However, our OP has snd_intel_hda as a module, thus the codec chip driver must be also as a module. I looked at the list of loaded modules and did not see anything that resembles chip codec. Therefore I made my recommendations. Of course, I may be wrong. Being wrong and trying something else is part of troubleshooting. |

Agreed. Then again, I performed a world update, then suspended the PC, and the following morning sound had disappeared. Excuse me for assuming that the cause could perhaps be found in some updated software libraries, ALSA being one option.

Agreed. I did not yet have the time to make a live-USB and test. Hardware failure is a possibility, but in my (many) years of experience with various flavours of linux, it is more common that some default setting here or there went astray (perhaps by an update). In many cases, somebody might look at the logs and say: "hey, you need to set this and that".

I thought snd_hda_intel took care of audio, but I guess I was wrong. OK, the plot thickens:

What kind of codec would I need for my sound chip?
I rebooted with several old kernels, where sound was working perfectly, and I get the same error, "no codecs found". Is this indicative of the "CMOS corruption" or "broken hardware"? Since this is a very simply PC I would expect that the "generic" codec would suffice.
It appears that the motherboard has an option to upgrade the BIOS, I will look into that. |

Dear Benevolent Buffoon (and non-buffoonish forum members),

Did you investigate what module is required for your codec and why it is not loaded? No |
I checked my kernel settings, as far as I can tell all available codecs are included as modules. MSI H110M Pro-VH, "on board audio"..... "Generic" codec should be good enough, none of the other codecs seem to be related.

Yes, I booted the PC with Ubuntu Live (version 20.04.1 LTS). Rather to my surprise, it resulted in the exact same error: "no codecs found". As in Gentoo, only the "Dummy Output" appears in the GNOME menu. I even flashed a new BIOS into the motherboard (MSI H110M Pro-VH). Still no sound.
Buffoon wrote: | You keep running your PulseAudio tools which give you nothing because underlying ALSA is broken, do you listen people who tell you this? No |
The PulseAudio wiki has a specific entry concerning the case that only "Dummy Output" appears:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PulseAudio#Dummy_output
and
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PulseAudio#Permissions
Since all the ALSA tools (alsamixer, alsa-info.sh) report the "SND Intel PCH" I was under the assumption that ALSA works fine.

It is not rewarding being helped by you, not at all. If my meager skills fail to meet your exalted expectations, feel free to simply ignore the thread. I don't appreciate none too much being shouted at by random buffoons on the internet.
Conclusion: since the audio does not work with Ubuntu Live with the same error message ("snd_hda_intel: no codecs found!"), even after updating the BIOS, is it safe to assume that this is hardware failure? |

For those who are interested: I finally solved the problem by installing a new Sound Blaster card in the computer.
This is the first time in my life that a piece of computer hardware has failed. |
