Posted: Sat Apr 19, 2025 2:35 am Post subject: [SOLVED] Cannnot boot new amlogic SBC |
|
|
Trying to setup yet another SBC and have run into a couple of problems.
#1 - No framebuffer. I'll figure this one out later. For now I'm using a UART for testing anyway.
#2 - Wont finish booting. (See output below)
The sd card is not encrypted so not sure why it would be hanging on that service..

u-boot and UEFI, two topics I am very interesting learning. u-boot something I play a bit in the past. UEFI I just start learning more about it.
May I joint to explore this? |

Update: I'm pretty sure I've confirmed what my problem is, I just cannot fix it. I CAN boot the micro SD card off a USB reader and get into Gentoo fine (dmesg from that posted below). I cannot use the same card in the built in SD reader. My guess is that I'm not getting what I need into the initramfs to load the built in mmcblk device. The drivers are there, they clearly load when I USB boot.

So after you USB boot success. Can you access the internal SD card? may be place some sample SD card into the internal reader and test access.
It could be just timing issue, may be mmc1 is not ready by the time initrd wants to access? you can try to use kernel command line "break=pre-trigger" to break into dracut shell and examine if you have right driver load into your initrd. |

yes I can access it fine after booting. I can even move the root SD card from the emmc to the external while the system is still retrying the dracut-initqueue stuff and it'll immediately finish booting.
I've gone as far as to add every single module/driver showing up in a lsmod into the initramfs. Still no luck. |

JumboAg,
I suspect its the asynchronous nature of the kernel detecting mmc devices.
The initrd needs ta wait for it before trying to use it.
That will be a feature of the init script in the initrd. _________________ Regards,

In this case it will helpful to see what you see inside initrd for example at dracut-initqueue stage. things like lsmod and dmesg. I think modern busybox have lsusb also. lsblk too. may be something is there just not the name your are expecting. |

Have you also confirmed they were loaded in the initramfs recovery shell? _________________ µgRD dev

JumboAg,
Can you unpick your initrd and pastebin the init script please? _________________ Regards,

Not quite sure what you're wanting. The "init" script in the image is a symlink to a systemd binary.
Code: | $ ls
bin etc lib roc run shutdown sysroot usr
dev init lib64 root sbin sys tmp var
me@solitudepi /tmp/initrd $ file init
init: symbolic link to usr/lib/systemd/systemd
me@solitudepi /tmp/initrd $ file usr/lib/systemd/systemd
usr/lib/systemd/systemd: ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable, ARM aarch64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux-aarch64.so.1, for GNU/Linux 3.7.0, stripped |
I'm sure I'm misunderstanding your ask. |

JumboAg,
I was expecting busybox and a human readable script that runs in the busybox shell.
For root on mmc and other asynchronouly detected media, the init script must check that the media is available before it attempts to mount any filesysems there.
Without that check, mounting root fails.
Then you get dropped to the rescue shell. When you look at /dev for your mmc, all is well, as that is time enough for it to appear.
I don't know how systemd does that mmc check, or if it does it at all. _________________ Regards,

Give me a few days to build a new micro sd card using openrc. Assuming I have the same issue, I'll post the requested data. I can move back to systemd once we figure out the root cause. |

There is no need to have a full openrc card. It would suffice to have a simple shell script that busybox interprets, where that script ends the successful case by mounting root and transferring control to systemd. |

Got it. I was missing a driver in the initramfs. Didnt catch it because the driver only loads once a sd card is inserted into the mmc slot. When I was doing an lsmod after booting off USB, I found several *mmc* drivers and was loading them but mmc_block was not on my RADAR. It was also in the mmc/core directory and I was loading everything in the mmc/host directory.
The good news is I can mark this as yet one more SBC I've managed to load gentoo on.
Thank you to everyone that assisted me with resolving this.
Code: | me@solitudepi ~ $ cat /etc/dracut.conf.d/meson-gx-mmc.conf
add_drivers+=" mmc_block meson_gx_mmc pwrseq_mmc mmc_core "
me@solitudepi ~ $ lsmod|grep mmc
mmc_block 53248 4
rpmb_core 16384 1 mmc_block
meson_gx_mmc 24576 0
pwrseq_emmc 12288 1
mmc_core 208896 3 mmc_block,pwrseq_emmc,meson_gx_mmc
