So, because the GIMP has recently released, at long last, version 3, I'm finding that media-gfx/gmic (which I have from the stefantalpalaru overlay, but which is not listed among the portage overlays at zugaina) no longer emerges. It's built against gimp-2, so understandable, but this raises the next question: why isn't gmic in the main portage repository in the first place? It appears to be an image-conversion library, and it's required by flowblade (an excellent video editor that is *also* tragically not in portage).

I see bugreports (like this one) referring to much older versions, so I assume it was in the main portage tree at one point. Was it simply pulled for lack of interest?

Thanks for the clarification.

Ah, so that was the problem. Alas! I guess I'll have to hope that the stefantalpalaru overlay updates the package to work against gimp-3. Or hope that upstream sorts out their issues so it can get put back in main portage. Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

If you have set up his overlay through eselect repository overlays list, it won't update anymore. Official overlays are mirrored an his overlay is cached at the point it was dropped. You need to use his overlay directly from his repository to get updated, you won't get then anymore if you selected it when it was official.

At least now we know he had at least one user...

Georgi

Ah, whoops, so there's another out-of-date part of my setup. Yes, I use his overlay, exclusively for electricsheep and flowblade. I'll check my repository config to see if I'm using his directly.

Cheers,

Message from Stefan, posted with permission.

======================================

That Gimp plugin is part of "gmic-qt" - a third-party repository that became abandoned after its owner died:
https://github.com/c-koi/gmic-qt

It was forked by the gmic developer, in an attempt to continue maintenance: https://github.com/GreycLab/gmic-qt

Unfortunately, the gmic developer is terrible at maintenance and he simply gave up tagging new gmic-qt versions.
Expecting him to port the Gimp-2 plugin to Gimp-3 is asking too much, so I kept an old gmic-3.5.0 with gmic-qt,
where you have to use Gimp-2 if you want the Gimp plugin, and a new gmic-3.5.2 without gmic-qt altogether.

So pick your poison.

=============================================

Cheers, Ian
