Hello so I just installed Gentoo for the first time. And while setting up a comfy WM setup( I use a suckless stack, so dwm, st, and dmenu) all my custom builds were working fine. Then I decided to install a web browser so I emerged firefox, but after it finished dmenu no longer works. I have tried reinstalling and using the build from the repos instead of mine but it still doesn't work. It comes up but it's just a blank text box that I can type in but it does nothing else. I have also tried regenerating my system locales as someone on here seemed to say that locales could cause problems with suckless software, but nothing changed.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum as Gentoo :).

First things first, we need informations about your system to help you out, Gentoo's coming with a very nice command, emerge --info, could you please post the output, using code quote from the forum too ?

It'll give us many precious information, such as your kernel, used USE flag, profile and such.

Regards,

Thank you for all your help. I've learnt a lot more about emerge and what it can do.

I have been reading more into dmenu, and it turns out it has a cache file in ~/.cache/dmenu_run
So after discovering that file existed and deleting it it works!!!

I'm very glad it was something so simple and not that I somehow broke a dep.

Once again thanks for the help.

Do I need to mark this topic has solved?

Good to know indeed, thanks for reporting this as well.

Yes, you should add [SOLVED] at the beginning of your topic's title.

Also, if I understood you use this WM: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Dwm

And I did not find anything related to your problem, I should have think of that first, dumb me ! :)

If you could confirm the page, specially this part: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Dwm#Troubleshooting

Was not containing your fix, I could check and see if it could be added, maybe someone as you would need it someday.

No worry I will take care of it.
