Hello,

Welcome here.

On Gentoo, you'll need to make some reading on the wiki, you should start here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:Main_Page

Follow instruction regarding the architecture of your computer.

If you need guidance, this topic will do, but you should probably have posted that into the installation section.

I'll ask a moderator to move it.

All of us here in this forum will help you. ;-)

Yes, it is wise to inform yourself before you start something. But we also need more information so that we can help you further. Of course the easiest way is to just install Gentoo on a new (bare) system. But maybe you have other goals: E.g. Do you want to keep your existing Linux and install Gentoo? Or do you want to install a second hard disk and install Gentoo there?

The more precisely you describe what you want, the more precisely we can help you. To get you started, I would like to give you this link: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pieti ... _at_Gentoo

This should be the easiest method and you should start with creating a bootable CD-ROM ... OR ... a bootable USB-stick. Use your current Linux to download and build this:

Step 1 is always: Download the GentooMinimalInstallationCD ->
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:A ... tion/Media

and create a bootable USB-stick with:

Code: Select all

# dd if=install-amd64-minimal-<release timestamp>.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4096 status=progress && sync
Proceed with reading all Links you have now ... and then start :D

So if I understand, you want to get rid off the actual Linux and use Gentoo instead.

You have two options:

1/ Install from an USB stick using the Gentoo Live CD installation, you'll have instructions to remove during the process the old OS
2/ From your actual Linux, chroot into an installation of Gentoo, which is a good way to proceed because you'll have an easier access to your browser and documentation, and more. Then you'll be able to remove the old Linux and resize your Gentoo on the entire disk.

Also, it would be great to give us the exact model of the laptop, just in case. I guess it's fairly compatible since you already have Linux. But it can also give us some informations needed (as your processor model, number of core & so thread it has, as how many ram and disk size available). They are pretty important before tuning Gentoo.

faroud,

Start by reading the Gentoo handbook, from end to end.
Now read it again. It's surprising how much you miss the first time.

The next step is to design your install. With Gentoo, that's your job. The distro does not do it for you.
That's the hard bit because you won't have done it before.
The design does not need to be complete and correct before you start. Changing it later is mostly a matter of CPU time.

Having designed your install follow the handbook to get the base system installed.
The base system can boot and build other things but very little else.

Post here with questions.
Regards,

NeddySeagoon

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
