I am going to build a media computer to play mp3's and dvd's
what media player should I use mplayer etc
this will have to be controld by a remote
the thing that I am woried about is being able to organize a large music collection

I like xmms for mp3's and other audio. I use kmplayer for DVD's, but that's just because I haven't tried anything else.

For movie viewing I think mplayer is the best choice. What you can't play with it probably isn't worth watching...
As for lasrge music collections, I think you would be better of with players like rhythmbox, musik or juK; IMHO they have a nicer way of organising songs, but that's just personal taste. |

Xmms foe songs, it's a nice Winamp style player.
mplayer for movies, (AVI, mpg etc), But I didn't manege to get subtitls in it.
Xine for DVD/VCD. and that's becuse I didn't maege to get them to work on mplayer.

| Actually it's pretty easy to have subtitles in mplayer, if you have the necessary fonts installed, and the subtitle file has exactly the same name as the movie itself and in the same directory, mplayer will autoload the subtitles and play them automatically. |

I have Hebrwe font's instaled, and I chosed a hebrew font bay\t al I se is:

or somthing like that.
mplayer suports True Type Fonts, that's right?

As far as I know it does, if you have truetype in your use flags it should compile the support in. |

I have USE=" ... truetype..."
I even saved the *.sub as unicode UTF8 and configurd mplayer to load unicode subtitls. That way I got nothing. Not eve the ____" ____" that I got before

| I believe that gmplayer has a button in the gui that allows you to manually pick a subtitle file. Maybe that will work? |

You need an MPlayer font package to be able to use OSD/SUB feature. There are many ways to get it:

Use the font generator tool at TOOLS/subfont-c. It's a complete tool to convert from TTF/Type1/etc font to mplayer font pkg (read TOOLS/subfont-c/README for details).
*
Use the font generator GIMP plugin at TOOLS/subfont-GIMP (note: you must have HSI RAW plugin too, see http://realtime.ssu.ac.kr/~lethean/mplayer/).
*
using a TrueType (TTF) font, by the means of the freetype library. Version 2.0.9 or greater is mandatory! Then you have two methods:
o
use the -font /path/to/sample_font.ttf option to specify a TrueType font file on every occasion
o
create a symlink:
ln -s /path/to/sample_font.ttf ~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf
If MPlayer was compiled with fontconfig support, the above methods won't work, instead the -font expects a fontconfig font name and defaults to the sans-serif font. To get a list of fonts known to fontconfig, use fc-list. Example: -font 'Bitstream Vera Sans'

Download ready-to-use font packages from MPlayer site. Note: currently available fonts are limited for ISO 8859-1/2 support, but there are some other (including Korean, Russian, ISO 8859-8 etc) fonts at contrib/font section of FTP, made by users.
Font should have appropriate font.desc file which maps unicode font positions to the actual code page of the subtitles text. Other solution is to have subtitles encoded in UTF8 encoding and use -utf8 option or just name the subtitles file <video_name>.utf and have it in the same dir as the video file. Recoding from different codepages to UTF8 could be done by using konwert or iconv programs.

If you chose non-TTF fonts, UNZIP the file you downloaded to ~/.mplayer or $PREFIX/share/mplayer. Then rename or symlink one of the extracted directories to font, for example:
ln -s ~/.mplayer/arial-24 ~/.mplayer/font
Now you have to see a timer at the upper left corner of the movie (switch it off with the o key).
(subtitles are always enabled, for disabling them please read the man page)
OSD has 4 states (switch with o):
1. volume bar + seek bar (default)
2. volume bar + seek bar + timer + file position percentage on seeking
3. volume bar + seek bar + timer + total duration of the media
4. subtitles only
You can change default behaviour by setting osdlevel variable in config file, or the -osdlevel command line option. |
Maybe if you try one of these methods it helps. |

Downloading a font, extracting it to the /usr/share/mplayer/font just causd mplayer to crash. Even when I don't configure it to work with that font!

What dose that mean? I am using Windows TTF, is it not good?

Best video player by far...TOTEM! 
I fell in love with it the first time I used it...it's simple, sexy, and plays most anything...including DVDs. I've used mplayer and it's not my thing. Try them both out and use what you like. |

| From the command line, I use mplayer. It's easy to use that way, and I'm familiar with its options. I used to user kmplayer as a GUI, but I tried kaffiene recently and I'm very pleased with it. And don't get me started on gmplayer... ugh. |
