Hi,

I know this is a known issue of long standing one, but despite lots of long threads I have found neither the cause nor the solution. And it is a serious PITA.

If I down load a pdf by clicking on a link in firefox, it uses okular , as I have specified.

However, if I right.click on a tab in the download status bar and select "open", it tries to open it with GIMP !

Gimp fails abysmally, have taken forever to load whatever it does, and lets me get rid of it again. The tab is now cleared since FFx dumbly assumes I read the file.

Now I don't know who or what set this dumb link for Gimp as pdf editor but I'd really like to know what sets this up and how to get rid of it.

PS I've note I've been using Gentoo for about 10 years so please don't just explain how to set up helper apps on firefox.

TIA, Gentree. 8)

One place I'd check is ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>/mimeTypes.rdf to see if there are any references to GIMP in there.

I strongly suspect it's a matter of /usr/share/applications/zzz-gimp.desktop.
That 'zzz-' prefix is for the sake of preventing it, but it might no longer work.
Though recently firefox gained native pdf support - for average pdf files it's quite decent.

@John

FVWM

@tomk:

~/.mozilla/....

good idea, but no. No mention of gimp in there, and this is the PDF entry:

Code:
 <RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:mimetype:application/x-download"
                   NC:fileExtensions="pdf"
                   NC:description="PDF document"
                   NC:value="application/x-download"
                   NC:editable="true">
    <NC:handlerProp RDF:resource="urn:mimetype:handler:application/x-download"/>
  </RDF:Description>

I have such a zzz file and it contains a pdf entry :D

Is the zzz prefix part of the installation or does that mean I've been in here already and forgotten about it?

thanks to all for the suggestions.

... sadly FFx is still trying to use gimp for pdf :x

BTW I'd already found a similar file somewhere and removed pdf, but don't recall this zzz business.

It could have been this file since I've been crawling all over the file system trying to find this sort of cruft and I did not make notes of the one or two changes I made.

Also found this in mimeinfo.cache in the same directory:
application/pdf=zzz-gimp.desktop;kde4-okularApplication_pdf.desktop;evince.desktop;

BINGO

That seems to have fixed it. Let's hope nothing reverts it.

Many thanks void' , you sent me to the right place. 8)

mimeinfo.cache is a file that's regenerated i.e. fdo-mime_desktop_database_update, so if you modified it, chances are it gets overwritten soon.

thanks for the warning.

So to find out what package is doing the guff and get it fixed I need to find out where this fdo-mime_desktop_database_update gets its silliness from.

You seem pretty on the ball with all this do you know how it works?
