Hi,

ChessBase is very hardcore chess software, database and helper. It works only for Windows. I need something running under Linux -- only very basic functionality like option to play games through and consider different variants; set up board (read SVG would be great) and then take notes about different possibilities...

What are my options?

Thanks

In unix, you generally have two parts to the chess game, an interface and an engine.

Engines:
'crafty' is an excellent free chess engine that you can install from portage. http://www.craftychess.com/
'gnuchess' is a popular engine, but not as strong. also in portage. http://www.gnu.org/software/chess/

GUI:
When I was playing I was on KDE and used something called 'knights'.
The old standard is 'xboard', I can't remember if I tried it, but it probably sucks graphically.
I think I ran GLChess on gnome, but can't remember.

There is also 'chess training tools' (java-based):

To see what's available in portage you can look here and then use Google to research the apps to see what is said about them:
http://gentoo-portage.com/Search?search=chess

There is a HowTo in the Gentoo Wiki, but I don't know how up-to-date it is:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Chess

If you are serious enough you might want to buy an application, you might want to look at shredder:
