Ok so I am currently using Xorg-6.8.2-r1 and Ati-drivers-8.10.19 with an ATI Radeon 9600. The installation went pretty seamlessly (except for forgetting to run opengl-update initially). Glxgears showed about 1900.
Now it was not until I tried stepmania that I noticed the system lagging a lot (compared to my old integrated nVidia chip). I ran glxgears and it shows the cpu is at 100%. I think that it is using the GPU because when I initially had opengl-update xorg-x11 i would only get about 200 in glxgears.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful

The ATI drivers can be a bit of a pain. (As I and many others are familiar with!)

Wedge has written a great Gentoo ATI Radeon FAQ that can be found here: http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html

Go through it and see if you're missing anything it says. You may have to play around with your kernel a bit.

My guess is direct rendering isn't working yet for you. Run
Code:
 glxinfo | grep direct
to see if it is. Also, try running fglrxinfo and fgl_glxgears. If fglrxinfo tell you it's using mesa, then it isn't working and fgl_glxgears just won't work period.

Anyway, if you need more help... there are a bunch of logs you should post that I can't remember off the top of my head.... but try following Wedge's FAQ first and see if that gets it working and if it doesn't, there are a bunch others more knowledgable than me that will probably jump in. :D

G'luck!

You seem to have everything working, and as far as I know it's normal to see 100% CPU usage with glxgears or other 3D apps using this driver.

But i cant play games properly because the cpu is at 100% usage. For example on stepmania (Dance mat game) the songs may pause and the graphics become very jumpy. Im pretty sure this is a problem

It certainly is, but are you sure it's not down to something else? Eg other programs running, DMA being disabled, weird kernel patches, that sort of thing. I've never had any problems with sound skipping in games. Try disabling ALSA and see if you still have problems, and you should also unload the nvidia driver in case it's getting in the way somehow.

I have the same problem and go through the faq now. The thing that bothers me is, it was working perfectly before. I did not change the kernel (no patches, no other version) nor the bios nor the ati-drivers nor my xorg nor any other vital parts of the system (no update world in any way either), as I believe. I was just emerging some small applications.

When I tried to run Enemy Territory once to jump around a little, it seemed as it was not loading anymore - in fact it was, just very slow since the cpu was running at 100%. Running glxgears gives me a nice number at first, it seems as it is running smooth, but the cpu is on full load. after a few seconds, the numbers go down, WAY down and the system is lagging VERY hard, so much that it is even taking quite some time to shutdown glxgears.

The drivers are being loaded, everythings is supposed to be working.

2.6.10 kernel, latest stable xorg version and ati-drivers (can't remeber the version - notebook is not around), ati radeon mobility 9700

Oh, programs running are (sometimes) gkrellm2, DMA is working, the sound is working well. I will try to play with ALSA being disabled.

Okay, here is a solution

When looking for the reason of the high CPU load, I thought I tried anything possible, including closing all programs that might run. Unfortunatley, my gkrellm2 was always hidden in the taskbar which I, of course, had to hide as well. When I was trying to solve the problem again yesterday, I really happened to close gkrellm2 and guess what ... ... no more CPU load of 100%, ET starts fast and without 3D trouble, glxgears gives me the expected performance, which does not break in after a couple of seconds.

chris_r, I would check for any other programs on your machine, too, especially the one that tells you how much CPU load you have. I am not sure why this problem exists and would like to know why, I only know that it is the reason for my machine...:?
