Since opensource software formaly known as WineX 4.0 seems to have great support for games now I was wondering what the top graphics card supported under linux for 3D gaming was. |

If you can, get a good-quality NVidia-chipset one. Granted, ATI has a better price/quality ratio, but the NVIdia linux drivers rock like ninja, whereas he ATI drivers, well, ... suck. I'd say get like 4x/8x GeForce something. Those seem to be nice. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

Ok, I guess it must be the "xt" there that makes the difference because in here a gf fx5900 costs around 300.
I tried searching the web for differences between gf fx5900 and the xt and came up empty. Nothing in Tomshardware (well, there's a surprise) and nothing in www.nvidia.com
I gather a fx5900xt is trivial to install in linux or at least as easy as my trusty ti4200? |

The Best possible graphics card you can run in Linux is.
GeforceFX 5950
That is the no BS awnser period.
That will change as soon as drivers become available for
Geforce 6800 ultra. Buying right now would be foolish. |

psychodad, I've got a sis740 and it sucks balls. Its not even 3D. Anything (and I mean ANYTHING) is better.
A geforce4 mx440 set me back less than AU$80, and made the graphics 10x faster (at least!). (Thats about US$40 - $50, I think).
Dunno if they're still for sale, but if you can get one, go for it! If your computer is as crappy as mine (which I'm assuming it is, due to the sis chipset), then there's no point getting anything better than this.
BTW, my 'puter is: duron 900, 384mb SDRAM, sis740, gefore4 mx440 |

Buying which one would be foolish? the GeforeFX 5950 because the new drivers are comming out or the Gefore 6800 ulta because the drivers are not comming out for a while? |

Yes Buying a FX5950 would be a little foolish, beacause the Geforce 6800 family is allready out.
Drivers may take a while, it would be prudent to wait.
Then again if money is no object... |

6800 should work fine on the current detonators. You just won't have the new features.
The reason it would be silly to buy one now is that the prices will drop quickly over the next month or 2. Prices of 5950's will most likely drop too. |

I'm in agreement with everyone here. nVidia's drivers 'rock like ninja' and OpenGL support is far, far supirior to ANYTHING avaliable. _________________ I was a Gangster for Capitalism, by Major General Smedley Butler.

I have read reports that the geforce 6800 is not currently supported (As in does not work) under any nvidia linux driver current or Beta. |

The 5900XT is the nvidia's mid-range videocard for gamers. The 5700 cards could be considered 'low-end' videocards, and the 5950 the 'high-end'.
By all accounts, the 5900XT performs well, and can clock up a bit. I have one, replaced an old GF3 card, so I can play Painkiller
I didn't have to change anything in the config - if you already have an nvidia card and nvidia drivers installed in linux, you just change the card and It Just Works (unless you're doing extremely funky things with your card somewhere). |

When comes to graphics cards in Linux, nVidia is pretty much your only choice. ATi's Linux drivers are pretty much crap. That said, nVidia cards give excellent performance in Linux. _________________ I suck at signatures. |

Ditto, window's benchmarks show that the 6800 fly's way ahead of the 5950 |

Yes, I will also agree that nVidia cards are superior in Linux because of the drivers. Proof: I have both a Sapphire Radeon 9800 PRO 128 and an Xtasy GeForce 4 MX440 64mb 4x. First, I ran the radeon and checked out both the ut2004 demo and the full version. The demo's onslaught map (forget the name) ran around 10-15 fps with action going on, and maxed out at 40 (looking at the sky or ground). I then took the radeon out and put the geforce in. I Emerged the latest nvidia drivers, and proceded to run the same tests. Same map, same areas, and I got 60fps in action sequences, and max of 120fps looking at clouds and ground! This is with both versions (demo, full) settings maxed out as well.
So, in conclusion, I have to say that ANY GeForce card out there will do you good, but try to avoid the GF4 Ti series, as I have heard problems with wine and those cards. My friend pwnz3r has an AOpen Geforce3 Ti200 64mb and he runs fine. Much better than my gf4 of course. Shoot for a top of the line in the next coming months, say Q3-Q4. The 5xxx FX cards will have dropped considerably by then. If you can't wait, hunt down a good GF3 or go with a GF4 MX card.
Hope I helped.
*EDIT*: My system specs are in my sig if you want to know for what the base was on the benchmarks. _________________ Thermaltake Polo 735

I don't know if that's true... my TI4200 works fine with WineX. |

Nvidia Cards in general have always worked well for me
i had a geforce 4 mx worked fine for most opengl stuff in general
but for games like unreal tournament 4 i had to upgrade so i bought a Geforce fx 5700 le 256mb .
Not the best there is but its 256mb and any game out there runs great with all graphical enhancements on
I steered clear of ATI because i always hear problems with them
they seem to have performance without stability
and also Nvidia Cards are much easier to setup in linux at least for me |

I tried searching the web for differences between gf fx5900 and the xt and came up empty. | They are identical except the XT's core runs at 390mhz and the non XT runs at 400mhz so they perform nearly identical. Memory on both runs at 700mhz. |

Also remember that PCI-Express versions of the 6800 are coming to mate with the new PCI-Express mobos. If you're jonesing for a 6800, I'd wait, tuck away a little extra $, and pick up one of the PCI-Express cards instead of the current AGP 6800. |

Don't forget that you need a good PSU (Power Supply Unit) to make the 6800 card work, I heard about 450 to 550 Watt (or however that is called) The 5950 (which I just bought, waiting for it to arrive ) needs less power.
Just to let you know

The new Nvidia drivers support the 6800 so people should either buy the 5900xt or the 6800 if they want a higher end card. The 5950's are almost as much as the 6800's (well here anyways) and the 6800's are a heck of a lot better and faster.
The 6800 Ultra's I'm seeing advertised are requiring a 350W power supply which are fairly cheap, If you can afford to spend that type of money on a video card a new power supply shouldn't be a big deal for you especially considering a new 350W power supply here costs about 3% as much as a 6800 Ultra. |

!Radeon X800XT Platinum Edition!
i think thats the best linux supported graphic-card...
and its requiring only the half power supply..
i ve the ati radeon 9700, and i think that the drivers for the ati cards are better as the nvidia (geforce) drivers... thats my expierience... _________________ Unix is simple. It just takes a genius to understand its simplicity. |

I thought ATI hadn't released drivers for PCI express cards yet? It only goes up to 9800 on the site.. Also FYI nvidia have recently released the 6106 drivers, which support PCI Express and so the new 6800 card. _________________ - I

Quote: | and its requiring only the half power supply.. | Although you're right that it has only one power connector the ammount of power the Geforce 6800 uses compared to the Radeon X800 is pretty close:
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040504/ati-x800-09.html
The latest ATI drivers for Linux are 3.9.0 and they do not support the X800 cards at all.
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/Linux_390.html
The Geforce 6800's support some neat features that that X800's don't like mpeg 4 decoding/encoding, hopefully I'll be able to use this with mythtv some day when they drop in price to something reasonable :) |
