Does /usr/X11R6/bin/sessreg exist, and is it executable? If so, maybe running the line you posted here by hand under strace will give some helpful information.

just same weird letters (sort of ^M, ^F)

in the same folder I found also an xdm-errors that says:

XFree86 Version 4.2.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 3 September 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.19 i686 [ELF]
Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Thu Oct 31 21:22:13 2002

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0: cd: /usr/share/config/kdm: No such file or directory
xdm error (pid 2817): fatal IO error 32 (Broken pipe)
xdm error (pid 2725): Server crash rate too high: removing display :0

I did only emerge gnome and xscreensaver. I did not emerge kde

at the moment i'm still only able to login as root in failsafe mode, no chance to login in a different mode or as a different user. I see the splash screen of gnome for a few second and then i'm sent again at the login page

I've had the same problems. Have a look at your .gnomerc-errors file. If it's complaining about fonts, run fc-cache in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
Also, check if Xftconfig exists in /etc/X11, if not, look for it under /usr/portage/x11-base-/xfree

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jul 6 02:11 4.2.99-patches

still not working :( :( :(

but at least the error is different: :) :) :)

before:

aborting...

** ERROR **: Failed to match any font. This could be due to a broken Xft configuration, or if you run XFree 4.1.0 due to a bug in libXrender. For more information about this, read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68030

now:

aborting...
/usr/libexec/gnome_segv: error while loading shared libraries: libbonoboui-2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: Error 23

further suggestions?

I'd reemerge libbonoboui and see if that solved this error. Check with emerge -up first to see the list of what will be reinstalled.
