Hi
I tested it using hdparm -tT /dev/hda command.
Cable is brand new, modern one (flat) - I've tested different cables - no difference.

It's correct that this is old junk, the question persists - if I add a second drive, make a stripe - is it gonna be faster? or this 20MB/s is the overall limit for ...

2 x PII 300MHz procesors :-) on DELL Poweredge mainboard.

20MB/s as a limit? I do not want to believe this. But on the other side I do not know how to check it. (theory or in pracise) :-(
The built in SCSI controler should support up to 40 MB/s so I do not think 20MB/s is the limit of processor.

I know stripping should make this almost double but the question is is there enough bandwith on PCI to acomplish that.
There is no problem with raid in new hardware but this junk is old, very old...

hdparm UDMA 100 gives 20MB/s - why sa slow?

Hi

So, I'm using old Dell2200 machine with PCI HDD controller chipset, ITE IT8212F ATA 133 RAID.
/dev/hda is the only hardrive. Master on chanel 0.
DMA is compiled in kernel as well as IT8212 chipset support.

Here is the score:
/dev/hda:
Timing cached reads: 172 MB in 2.04 seconds = 84.26 MB/sec ...

dzienks za hint z tym genlopem :-)

Przypatrywałem się w top co moje oba procki robią w czasie emergowania.

Jak idzie kompilacja na procesach cc1 (jakiekolwiek to C jest, plus, minus, nie wiem hehe) to jeszcze jak cię mogę kilkadziesiąt procent pokazuje na każdym.
Ale jak już idzie np proces ...

I found great howto about installing gentoo on raided hdds, I tried all of it and I'm stuck

I created partitions on my two identical hdds
Disk /dev/sda: 36.7 GB, 36703934464 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4462 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Thanks for all tips.

I finaly resolved this by deleting everything from ~/.cache ... :-)

I'm working as root because on this stage 99.99999% activieties I do needs root rivileges.
And I'm to lazy to read how to create new user :-))))

kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.12-gentoo-r3 rootdelay=10 root=/dev/sda1

In my case rootdelay option solves everything.... USB boots with no other tricks.

On my USB drive I created just two partitions / and swap so I do not have a separate /boot partition so my kernel is on /boot/kernel-blabla-r3

I deleted all files from /root/.config - no help.
Added new user - and xfce is working like new :-) so I copied everything from /home/user/.config to /root/.config
changed owner, grup permissions... no help.

the truth must be out there....

I need help.
I was configuring my xfce4 desktop, panel, themes, colors and everything. I set up two terminals on desktop and then exited with save session.
Now my desktop is black, I cannot change anythng in settings like background picture and so on... and I cannot right click on desktop to ...

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash- SOLVED

now I know.
it's the external enclosure (cheap CompUSA OEM product ;-) ) which causes this problem.
I swaped the harddrives and now it's recognized as scsi correct way.
I'm able to install grub on it.

I have two external USB drives connected, both I can see, mount partitions and so.
Let's call them Windows one and Gentoo one.
I found the difference in dmesg when I connect them

For Gentoo one:
usb 1-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
ubb: device 7 capacity nsec 58605120 ...

I have read all what I found on this forum and other places... and I will probably be able to do all the things to make my gentoo USB HDD bootable as soon as you help me to set up grub on it :-)))

I installed gentoo from Knoppix following Handbook but just with one reiserfs partition on USB ...
