Another possibility is that, if init processes are started as 'daemon' user, this user is now lacking some group membership. Once I log in to console mode, starting '/etc/init.d/xdm' as root does work.

This is rather annoying.

Same thing here it seems.

First full update of the system this year, and now X/Gnome appears to die on startup.

Added 'consolekit' to 'default' run level as recommended in other threads, but since 'xdm' uses 'consolekit', I assume that this would be started anyway.

Symptoms:

Following boot, the ...

I have used pan for years without this problem, but a few months ago I started seeing the symptoms described above. I've had the "PASS_MIN_LEN" things for a while now. I just upped my system to gcc 4.x, so spent a few days rebuilding everything, and it didn't go away. I also tried re-emerging shadow, to no effect.

I just commented out the 'PASS_MIN_LEN 5' entry in '/etc/login.defs', which solved the issue for me ...

However, following a regular sync/emerge world ...

Do you overclock ?
Kernel compiled with an unstable compiler ( to last post) ?
Your cooler is in good contact with the surface of the CPU ?
Have you tried to go back to vanilla-sources, or a 2.4 kernel ?

No overclocking.

I haven't changed the compiler from the default Gentoo one.

Using JDK 1.5, you need to get '-source 1.4' into the javac arguments, to compile pre-Java5 code.

Either an envar, or the equivalent of 'CFLAGS' ('JFLAGS'?) maybe? This is really an issue for the project to specify rather than a global setting though.

I'm currently building my first (full) gentoo ...
