X and Linux Memory Management

This is very weird.

I have a Nvidia Geforce 6200, with 256mb onboard ram.
If I start X with the "vesa" driver, under top, it shows X using a little more than 256mb of virtual ram.
256mb of that or so is mmaped from /dev/mem
Is this the video card's ram?

Res is something like 38mb with a bunch of ...

Thanks.
I found it works flawlessly if I use the gameport to USB adapter that came with it, however. Awesome, regardless. :)

I just had this happen to me with an EVGA 6200, windows or linux as well.
I sent it back. A 5700 works fine in my PC, and that uses more power. Waiting on the replacement.

Uhh...I think that card has an extra power supply connector. You connected it, right?

Is OpenGL mode slow for anyone else?

Running wow with -opengl in wine or cedega yields really crappy framerates.
DX mode is much faster in both, although incomplete in wine.

Windows, the problem is similar. DX mode fine, GL renderer as slow as it is in Linux.

I have a GF4MX 440.

I just bought a ...

Yeah. Running it on a NTFS partition works. Maybe I'll copy it to my reiser and see if it still works.
Regardless, it's slow as heck for whatever reason, ~10fps on my gf4mx athlon 2200. It doesn't seem to be locking up my computer like cedega does, but cedega runs much faster.

Under windows, it ...

Hrm. I'll try running it off my NTFS drive via wine.

CEDEGA also locks my computer up totally within an hour of play, I can't even SSH in, and my temps are low and ram memtests fine so the problem isn't hardware.

Weird. Nevermind. It only partially copied, I ran out of space on my block device. It worked then, I made the device larger and it gives me a black screen again, ext3 or not. Must have been dumb luck.[/code]

loopback on my reiser4, ext3, works.

Wine doesn't output any errors though on reiser

gettimeofday()/select() Using way too much CPU. What Broke?

Ugh. A while back, my hard drive died. I was running gentoo, built from stage 1. It was pretty zippy.

Since then, I got my hard drive back. I installed gentoo from stage 3. There shouldn't be that much of a difference, right?

I installed azureus bittorrent client recently. Oh my. 99% CPU ...

emerge -C your alsa lib you have installed

build those with ./configure make make install

The latest version in gentoo is broken

I have it all seemingly fixed, except when I boot it says the init scripts have detected that my system doesn't support udev/devfsd. This just started saying this recently. Any reason?

I'm already back on the box I borked. It's still somewhat borked, as in giving that bizzare-o udev/devfs error message, but there's too much stuff on my HD to just reinstall from scratch. How much damage could I have actually done? I'm posting from KDE/firefox.

Emerge world, system borked

I just did an "emerge world" a while ago to update my system. Apparently that's now how you do it. Part of the way through, C++ programs stopped compiling. I already had GCC 3.4.3 installed, so that wasn't updated. They started complaining about not finding a c++ lib in /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux ...

Nvidia OpenGL: undefined reference to `_nv001172gl' - Fixed!

Ok, I figured out what my issue is, I see some people also have it here.

a) Make sure you have no Mesa gl libs on your system where ldconfig can find them
b) if opengl-update nvidia seems to work, but next ldconfig breaks it, you probably have old nvidia libraries somewhere on your system. This was ...

That's analog.

Logitech Wingman Gamepad

Sorry for the crosspost. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to work? I'm using the adi module, along with ns558 joydev gameport etc. It uses the gameport and not the USB port. It worked in 2.4.x.

I have an nforce2 mobo. Apic/ACPI just started working flawlessly in 2.6.7 or so, so I enabled it. It works like a charm, and is stable. Funny thing is, I can't run it in windows. Enabling it causes IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors, BAD_POOL_IO, etc. I've reinstalled XP and 2k. All my hardware tests ...
