Leeching? What is OSS all about then? We are allowed to leach each others without running into legal troubles.
My advice, go, leech, steal (Free Software) code, change it, hack it, mess it and GIVE BACK.

Sabayon is a consumer. They are not a member of our community. They consume Gentoo resources and provide minimal feedback.
Yup. They take and take and take . . . and provide nothing in return. They don't send us code, developers, or lend a hand to fixing stuff or otherwise help out. That's not how ...

It is not true they didn't contributed to Gentoo, at least in early days of Sabayon. I remember of a bug report about ltmodem (see [bug=148524]bug 148524[/bug]) in which Fabio provided a patch for making it compatible with the new version of kernel. Also, searching in Bugzilla after bugs reported ...

I just only say "gentoo howtos and tutorials on doc.gentoo.org and www.gentoo-wiki.org apply perfectly to Sabayon Linux". Because it is.
Sabayon Linux Project Managers never asked for an official support. We don't need that, we support our users in complete autonomy.

Hah, right. You've admitted it in channels like #gentoo-amd64 and #gentoo. Try joining #gentoo-dev sometime and talking to the developers there who've dealt with users who were "encouraged" to lie about what distro they use. Anyway, the point is, Sabayon is not Gentoo, anymore than Ututo or ...

The idea is adding _real_ value to a plain Gentoo in this way:
- get things to work out of the box
- add applications that help people to configure things without becoming mad (Acceleration Manager for Beryl - that we're the official partners, desktop-acceleration-helpers, keyboard-configuration ...

This is due in part because the creator of Sabayon has admitted that he has told his users to lie about what distro they're using when they come to Gentoo IRC channels in order to get technical support.

Sorry, I can't find where I could have said that?
REALLY, WHERE???? what a great ignorance ...

I would like to suggest to remove the GUI installer till this problem is fixed.

Iv used the GUI installer 5 times on different machines and had 0 issues like this. Most likely reason why is because I don't use the GUI installer that comes included on the CD, for I do as the wiki says, if you ...

The idea behind how to structure GLI is wrong and problematic.
Why not using Anaconda? it's well tested, maintained by RedHat (and not by some geeks) and, most important, does not corrupt the partition table, in any case. So, my technical question is, why reinventing the wheel and re-implementing ...

Yes but I take the example of the SabayonLinux Installer Upgrade code (http://svn.sabayonlinux.org). If I'd have a portage option to let it to force blockers removal I won't have to remove every package that is not available on the current live system. It's hard to understand, I make an example ...

Yes but I think that Portage does not scale in this area if compared to apt just for this matter. It's hard to work on a Upgrader that compares the installed packages of two gentoo installations.

Portage auto-removal feature

is there an option that auto-removes blocked packages?
For example, when I switch from kde (monolithic) to kde-meta (meta packages). Should be fine if portage automatically removes the blockers and then install the kde-meta packages.

Why not? Just an option, not a behavior. We I work on apt-based ...

Unfortunately, if you have ati-drivers or nvidia-drivers installed, the X.Org drivers' DRI won't work. You have to do:

Code: Select all

emerge -C ati-drivers nvidia-drivers
rm -rf /etc/env.d/09ati
env-update && source /etc/profile
eselect opengl set xorg-x11
/etc/init.d/xdm restart
hope this helps

I said that, but no one believed me... sorry.
I think that we should work together instead, I have ported anaconda on gentoo without having all the redhat fuss installed (not like the one from VLOS). Why not completely reconsider what GLI is?
Porting GLI code to anaconda (they both use python) is ...

open:

/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi
at line 74, change true to false.
Restart Hal & login again into KDE.

that's a gentoo bug that I am going to open tomorrow on bugzilla. I was talking with K. Ottens about that.
