Thanks for the tips - I ended up using RUNT earlier this afternoon (booted from a floppy, loaded kernel from USB flash). I'll have to remember the single user mode bit for next time, though :)

I guess I might have been a bit mistaken when I described floppy distros as too old. I think it was more ...

Selectively Disable modules on boot? (system hangs on mods)

Alright, I'll admit I did something stupid. I threw in the latest and greatest nvsound module without providing myself a backup kernel. We all know what happens when you get overconfident and make changes to the kernel/modules without having a failsafe (at least eventually), right?

Yep, the system ...

Well, that did the trick to compile it. However, unfortunately, my machine just hangs when it loads the nvsound module. Currently working on getting my busted-arse cdrom to take a boot cd so I can fix it. My kingdom for a floppy disk...

The nforce-audio ebuild reports that it compiled successfully (albeit with multiple warnings), but then reports that it cannot statd nvaudio.ko and thus does not copy it into the modules tree. The network driver, however, compiles and is working fine.

Any suggestions? I noticed that I did have to ...

I may have missed something by just skimming through the page, but I thought the minimal level of compatibility with this standard was "a system for tracking, versioning, installing, managing (etc etc)". Packages. Now, granted we don't directly support RPM in the way that redhat does it, but doesn't ...

Well, so far, so good. No runaway Apache. I've pretty much reverted back to vanilla settings, minus setting threads to die after 10k requests (when in doubt, I figure try the proposed suggestion first!).

Now while responses are up, response time is rather sluggish. Apache's grabbing about 40-60% of ...

Apache hangs the machine with iowait - config help?

Hello again,

I recently helped in setting up an ad content server for a gaming website. It's a fairly busy server (I have to prune the log about once a day or it fills to 2 gig, so it gets hit a bit). Luckily, the box is a hyperthreaded dual 2.8 xeon with 2 gigs of ram.

However, about once every ...

Recommendations for a good webmail program

Hello,

If anyone came across my other post, this will probably seem pretty humorous. Anyhow, I'm looking for a relatively simple webmail app. I've used horde, but it always seems these things want imap, and darnit, I don't want to have to enable that. Any ideas? I'll try openwebmail if I can get ...

Compiling suidperl into perl from source

Hey everyone,

I know, I know, gentoo provides a wonderful emergeable perl package. However, for various reasons I can't quite go into, I need to compile a second version of perl from scratch.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why it's not compiling suidperl for me. It says it's in by default ...

I'm still wondering where -r8 went. 6-8 mirrors now and can't find it either. Not the end of the world, but annoying :)

I very much like the community surrounding Debian - in fact, 2 of my roomates use and swear by it. My only real issue with it is having to resort to the unstable tree to stay anywhere near current :)

Well hopefully no actual game servers would be run on these boxen. It would be more along the lines of forums, member database, public ftp, etc.

The reason we are contemplating the switch is because currently BSD is having serious issues utilizing both processors on our database machine with mySQL ...

Every time I think I've seen all the cool Linux development projects, someone shows me another! Nifty stuff.

Does openmosix have redhat issues? I seem to remember that their backporting of NTPL caused some severe headaches to wine, or something similar.

Gentoo vs Fedora (benefits and drawbacks of both)

I hate to start a thread of this type, but I'm in the middle of a pickle here. I work for an online gaming league, and we've decided to ditch BSD as an OS on our servers due to its problems with properly running MySQL on a dual processor box as well as maintainance issues (not to mention our ...

2Wire HPNA USB Device Under Linux - Possible?

Hey all,

I've recently infected a friend of mine with the Gentoo bug, but he unfortunately chose to purchase a 2Wire HPNA (Home Phoneline Networking) kit for his network. Try as he might, he cannot get it working under Linux.

I've seen HPNA PCI cards working under Linux elsewhere, but not USB ones ...

This is generally the part where you can sneak in dirty jokes, using "emerge" in this romantic metaphor, but in the interest of good taste I'll be quiet

Thank you to the idlers in #gentoo on freenode!

Hello,

I just thought I'd give a thumbs up to the people who idle in the #gentoo channel for their quick help to my silly problems today. For some reason I overlooked the fact that the universal livecd (required to boot gentoo) was in a different directory than the actual package cd, something I ...
