x11-misc/picom-13 missing default shader?

When I try to start picom (recently updated from picom-12.5 to picom-13), I get the following error:

I probably should have mentioned I'm using FVWM as my WM, not gnome or KDE. I don't have it set to start automatically in the config file; it seems the browsers and JabRef are configured to use it for password storage.

However, I *never* use gnome-keyring to store any online passwords. I guess I ...

Everything wants access to the "default keyring"

So, for a while now when trying to start the Brave browser, I get at least two prompts from "gcr-prompter" saying "an application wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked" and asking for a password. Now, it's also Opera, and the most recent version of JabRef (which also won't open the ...

Update: solved. I needed to remerge xorg-server after updating xkbcomp, and now I'm back to my GUI, hurrah.

I love gentoo so much. Every problem I have, I post it and nice people help me solve it within a couple hours. It's the best.

That website gives me a 403. But 'equery f xkeyboard-config' only returns files in /usr/share on my system, so I'm not sure what's missing.

Sorry for the brief and typo-laden texts. I'm on my phone :(

ETA: posted a bug .
ETA2: it was a misconfigured xkbcomp, now patched, but for some reason still ...

xkbcomp: missing /usr/lib/x11/xkb/rules/evdev [SOLVED]

I just ran 'emerge world' yesterday. On reboot, xorg fails to start with the following error in the log:
(EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/lib/x11/xkb/rules/evdev

As far as I know, I've never had this file: I have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/12-keyboard.conf for setting the config.

What package ...

I cleaned up world a bit, removing duplicates, meta-versions, and all the ::gentoo. I don't know what's in @system or in my profile. This world file is *very* old, copied over from backups of much older machines going back probably 20 years. I'm sure a lot of it is obsolete by now.

As for your ...

I've run `emerge -DuUpv @world | grep LLVM` to get a list of any package that mentions llvm, and remerged those packages (two python versions that now no longer support llvm, and doxygen. Now I see this:

The only package that came up on the list mentioning llvm was qttools, and I remerged it. I also set `*/* LLVM_SLOT: -* 21` in package.use to set it globally. Still no luck: I still get the same list of circular dependencies. I suppose I could just hard-unmerge them and see if anything comes up.

I ...

UPDATE: whoops! it turns out vlc was the only package hard-blocking ffmpeg-8. So I got rid of it and started emerging ffmpeg. Now that failed with the following error:
mkdir -p fftools/graph

Hi Ionen,

I do not, in fact, use vlc for anything, and I only use firefox-bin. So I'll see about getting rid of vlc and whether I can push through the rest of the upgrades.

Cheers,

Hi Hu,

thanks for clarifying. However, in that case I'l have to wait until all the other dependencies have been resolved, since there are still some blockers in the tree that aren't due to slot-matching requirements.

Cheers,

this should apply to anything greater than 6.1, with the highest available being typically selected.
Except that ffmpeg-8 has a different meta-version: media-video/ffmpeg-8.0:0/60.62.62. So that gets blocked, while anything in the 7 series will still carry the :0/59.61.61 version and be accepted ...

Solving slot conflicts with ffmpeg:0/60*

So it seems there's an ffmpeg-8 out, and this is causing portage to skip the update due to slot conflicts. On my system, the affected packages are:

media-libs/opencv-4.12
media-video/vlc-3.0.22_rc1-r2
media-plugins/audacious-plugins-4.4.2-r1
app-text/calibre-8.11.1 (version bump in my local overlay ...

Sorry for the double posting. I had a suspicion that since electricsheep was running fine on its own when invoked from the console, it might not be an issue with that package, but with some other (xscreensaver, maybe?).

xscreensaver no longer runs electricsheep

After a world update a couple days ago, xscreensaver no longer runs electric sheep. I get a black screen for ten seconds or so, and then see my desktop blurred (which I assume is the compositor). I can run electricsheep directly from the console (where it notably displays video spread across the ...

Oh, my mistake then. I thought the dependency was on KVM being set to =n (which is how it's set on my system). I guess lscpu doesn't take into account whether the kernel configuration makes it possible to exploit the vulnerability in the first place.

Thanks for clarifying!

Enabling VMScape mitigation [SOLVED]

I have a Ryzen 7 CPU, which apparently has a vulnerability to the VMScape exploit (see here ). In the kernel options, it should be an available switch under "CPU Vulnerabilities", but I don't see it. `lscpu` reports that the CPU is vulnerable to the exploit. The Kernel setting depends on CPU ...

yeesh, what a silly thing to do. I mean, I get it, distros sometimes use wildly obsolete or bleeding-edge engines. But packaging your own style seems … suboptimal.

Anyway, I added that variable to my .bashrc, and now it matches my other Qt apps.

I really wish there were a way to set everything to ...

audacious, calibre, not obeying Qt6 theme setting [SOLVED]

I'm using qt6ct to set my Qt6 theme engine to use Kvantum, which has a nice flat SVG-based style that comes at least mostly close to the flat Gtk-3 style I've been using for over a decade. However, calibre and audacious (when the latter is set to use the Qt interface) don't seem to be using this ...

pages with multimedia crash in opera-beta-122 [FIXED]

I recently update world, which included updating opera-beta to www-client/opera-beta-122.0.5643.6.

Now, pages with multimedia (which includes, so far, SubStack and Youtube) will crash about midway through loading, and videos won't play. Both work fine on another browser (Brave), and downgrading to ...
