/etc/make.profile was a link to /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/2.4

I deleted it and remade it to /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 and it works fine now.

You ever get this to work? Outlook, OE work fine. Thunderbird pauses 5 seconds because it fails the first try, but then works. Eudora fails outright.

In general-

Put both hard drives in machine
get second one mounted /mnt/newharddrive
rsync -av / /mnt/newharddrive
(expect to see lots of errors when it tries to copy /proc)
remove old hard drive
boot to livecd, install grub onto new hard drive
