HPLIP with Photosmart 8450 works, but HAL doesn't?

Not really kernel or hardware, but this is the closest forum I could find -- though, I'm sure one of the mods can do better ;)

I just managed to get my HP Photosmart 8450 printer to work with HPLIP -- I can access the 4-in-1 card reader through /dev/sdc1 or similar. However, I've got some problems ...

Well, I upgraded to a Seagate 36GB 10K disc and it's much noisier. I don't really mind though.

If you want it to stay quiet, stick with what you've got at the moment, I'd say.

Be sure that the binaries aren't being overwritten. If a 64 bit binary links to a 32 bit binary, you will get that error.

Mabye we should change the standard shell from bash to zsh? A lot of people prefer it.

As much as I'd like to see zsh take over the world, there are lot of reasons for this not happening:

despite the fact that zsh is nearly similar to bash, there are a few gotchas. Adding emulate -L sh to the ...

Well, the Z Shell book has just been released:

Here is my zshrc .

The main problem that is definately true of Gigabyte and MSI boards is that they do have trouble with double sided RAM (the most common and cheapest if you want a high capacity DIMM, I'd be surprised if you could even find a single sided DIMM bigger than 512MB or so) at higher frequencies on their ...

The man pages are well written but rather long (they are divided into several, but the total number of lines is around 45,000). They are more useful if you know what you're looking for. You might want to try here, here and this is very useful too.

ZSH users (lovers?) thread

ZSH is a fantastic shell, both for programming and day-to-day use. Much like a small business with a great product but not enough capital to market it, ZSH doesn't really have the same amount of users as bash, simple because everyone is constantly shouting out how good bash is.

Some of the things ...
