it will ask you to run the following command part way into the emerge

ummm ok

I saw you answer to the to the second one but not the first blocked one which is the gnome-themes, so if I unmerge the themes package do I then re-emerge it afterwards, I don't have to have gnome 2.10 if it has no themes.

what about blocked packages

Are these blocked packages going to be a problem?

# emerge -pv gnome

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] <=x11-themes/gnome-themes-2.8.2 (is blocking x11-themes/gtk-engines-2.6.2)
[blocks B ] <app-admin/gnome-system-tools-1.1.91 (is ...

yes thats it, /dev/snd

I believe there is an issue wih udev and pam fighting over the persmission, actually udev sets them then pam redoes the permissions and they are not correct.

just remove /etc/security/console.perms (since pam is really not needed this wil not cause a problem)

totally agree, I did a second install on my computer and did it that way as well. The first one was a kludge to make it work cause I can't follow directions!! :-)

But yes you are correct its much better to use the xdm script as is, and just make the changes in rc.conf to use "entrance"
