I've just installed mozilla-firefox, and uninstalled firefox-bin, and now it works, so I'm guessing the problem is buried somewhere in all that emul-crap that us x86_64 users have to put up with.
I'm having the same problem with firefox-bin and thunderbird-bin (yes, on an amd64), and I don't want ...

syslog-ng.conf v3 and the Gentoo Security Handbook

I've been using the recommended /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf file from code listing 4.1 of the Gentoo Security Handbook , but that file no longer works since upgrading to syslog-ng v3.0.4. There are apparently several significant syntax changes to the conf file format. I know I could RTFM, but ...

Didi you emerged/unmerged sys-libs/libcap-2.11 recently (POSIX capabilities) ? Or maybe some other libs, therefore I'd advice a "revdep -- --ask".
That's possible -- I'll try it when I get home tonight. Thanks -Ross
Alas, revdep-rebuild turned up nothing :( . I did not have sys-libs/libcap ...

Good idea, but I'm definitely logged in as root when I'm trying all this According to your prompt, you're not.
OK, if you want to see the full cut-n-paste, here it is: root@porcupine ~ $ dnsmasq

dnsmasq: setting capabilities failed: Operation not permitted
root@porcupine ~ $ dnsmasq -d
dnsmasq ...

looks like you're not starting it as root? you need to do that for it to work properly. It would normally switch to user nobody once it's done with it's startup - that bit is probably failing coz you're not root.

It works with -d because that disables the switch user bit

Good idea, but I'm ...

Bad choice of words then, I meant "new" as in "newly emerged", not "new version compared to the current one"

Your "old" nxserver-freenx (with USE=-nxclient) owns the file /usr/bin/nxclient. Emerging freenx with USE=nxclient will pull in net-misc/nxclient, which would also install /usr/bin/nxclient ...

To handle blocked packages, the best way is usually to remove the old package and then emerge the new package (in this case nxserver-freenx)

The blocker is here because switching the nxclient USE flag would cause file collisions on nxclient between nxclient and freenx
Thanks for your reply, but I ...

nxclient is blocked

I've been running nxserver-freenx for years without problems :D , but now I want to include nxclient on my gentoo system. The problem is that when I add in USE=nxclient I get into a seemingly unresolvable block :? :
# USE=nxclient emerge -vp nxserver-freenx

These are the packages that would be ...

Actually, I was trying to emerge Ardour 0.99.3, but even trying Ardour 0.99.2 (which I've just tried to emerge), I run into the same problem--a string of SCONS-related ACCESS DENIED messages and a failure to emerge Ardour.

I have tried emerging Ardour 0.99.3 and 0.99.2 on a backup installation of ...

udept's /etc/portage/ cleaner doesn't work well with layman.
I meant to report this earlier. The reason is because of yet another undocumented syntax feature of make.conf. Layman sources in its own make.conf as so: source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf I looked into the udept code but it wasn ...

Feature request

Thanks again for this eXtremely useful script! :)

So I guess that your "dirty" solution might be the only good one if this is checked too early.
But the right script should be the one looking for a /boot/System.map with a more comprehensive warning message. That would be cleaner no ?

Like this :

if [ -d "`depdir`" -a -f /proc/modules ...

Many alsa drivers produce distorted sound when both master and PCM volumes are at 100%.

Does it sound the same if you play PCM at 70-80% volume?
No, I keep the volume at 75 or less. I've gotten Amarok to sound good (by upgrading to v1.4.0a-r1), so I'm reasonably happy now, but I'm still disturbed ...

Please let me know.
