"udevd ... Address family not supported by protocol", is your kernel config "CONFIG_UNIX" set to "m" or not configured?

Modern Genkernel rely on udev to trigger module loading, so if udevd not working kernel may not able detect what kind of rootdev is.

That was it!
I had it configured it as a ...

[SOLVED]initramfs won't load required modules for mounting /

Hello,
I've been using genkernel for a lot of time but suddenly I got a strange behavior:

When system boots with initramfs, it will not auto load any modules, failing to mount root and presenting me with a console. If I do lsmod there, the list is empty. I have to manually modprobe ahci, sd_mod and ...

Try without using ccache.

Hello,
I don't think that's ccache related. I don't have it, yet I had similar issues trying to use crossdev for AVR.
I did an "ldd /usr/libexec/gcc/avr/as" after I saw biergaizi's post and I saw that it could not locate libopcodes-2.25.1.so and libbfd-2.25.1.so.

I ...

Re: Replacing laptop hard drive with SSD.

Hibernation does need swap, but at least TuxOnIce can use swap files instead of partitions. In main kernels it may still be possible but with some tweaking.

Installation on a OpenVZ VM

Hi!
My provider uses OpenVZ and I chose Debian 6 64bit (no gentoo on choices).
I want to install gentoo, and I followed instructions here: http://linux.arantius.com/how-to-install-gento-onto-any-openvz-vps
My system when unbootable and I had to reinstall an image.
Even serial console did not work ...

So you're sure that PC cannot be damaged from Gentoo?

If it has survived Microsoft operating systems with the whole ecosystem of all kind of viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits etc, then I'm sure it's safe to use linux.

Now seriously, why would Linux damage your pc? It reminds me of some mothers ...

Yes, this is the case. I wrote "IF that was the case", ie if it was a form of a deep sleep state, which is not.

It happened several months ago :-). Haven't installed Gentoo since then and I'm about to do it now :) - I was afraid Gentoo (or rather misconfiguration or misuse) could do that. It's only the shame, that Microsoft "equips" all of the laptops with unwanted software... I've paid for that windows. Eh ...

Ralink 3573 / Cisco AE3000: Cannot scan for APs.

Hi!
I downloaded official drivers (rt2800usb does not support rt3573), deselected (and blacklisted) all ralink stuff in the kernel, compiled and installed.
I get an ra0 interface (and not a wlan0).

With iwconfig:

ra0 Ralink STA

Okay. The last issue is somehow complicated.

There was Gentoo on this laptop once. It worked just fine for about 1,5 month. Then, something weird happened. Some day it failed to launch and I must have removed its battery to make it work again. A week have passed without any issues. Then, i ...

Of course you can. You *must* have udev. Dashes in front of use flags mean that they are not yet enabled, not that they cannot be enabled.
Enable use flag "openrc" for udev (or globally) and the dash will become a plus in U column. You can re-emerge udev ...

Re: Battery drain Gentoo > Windows. Any solutions?

Compiling a governor is not enough, you must have a userland utility to handle it. You can always compile ONLY conservative so no problem.
Package sys-power/cpufrequtils can help you find out your current governor and cpu clock. You can always look at the /sys tree if you are familiar.

Two versions you mean udisks 1.x and 2.x (1.99)? That's pretty normal, or at least acceptable.
Some programs use the later some the former version.

And when you see undefined symbols/references then you probably have to run "revdep-rebuild" from app-portage/gentoolkit

As for openrc, I thought ...

Chipset is not supported by in-kernel rt2800usb yet.
