I am not shure about VLC here....I never used my Raspi together with any desktop environment. Well at least not anymore afterl I saw how slow the Raspi behaves when running LXDE.
The main reason I stick to omxplayer is simply that it works from the console and plays back perfectly your 1080p ...

I have not seen any working solution to play back Youtube stuff directly from their servers within a browser.

A feasibly way though is to grab their content, store it as local file and play back the local copy of the file with a player of your choice.

i am using Raspbian on my Raspi with youtube ...

Question: Using szap to record full DVB-S stream ?

Hi all,

it is quite a while that I have been using a bash script from here (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/TV_Tuner) which combine szap and dd to record DVB streams for any supported device.
I like to use this script because it produces much lower CPU load then GnuTV for example. Unfortunately szap ...

I am sorry for the loss of your wife ! In regard to your questions it seems to me that you do not want to spent too many time editing those videos, right ?

Beside using a transfer service the monetary cheap way would be buying a used Haupauge hardware encoding device (like a PVR150 PCI card or a ...

keet,

re-encoding all your movies to make subtitles work sound like a real PITA to me. May be you should try to get another player which supports native VOBSUB subtitles inside an MKV and convert all your DVDs to MKV via a simple script and MakeMKV ?

There are a lot of hardware players. Even a ...

1) Trying a completely different branch / version of WINE rather than trying different RCs of the same version.
2) Run WINE games inside a separate XServer
3) Start WINE plus game inside a script followed by a wineserver -k if you exit the game
4) Try ...

The question that remains for me is if you really gain any benefits from this.

Your shell script is more transparent and has less external dependencies.

makemkv sports both a GUI and a commandline version.

The commandline version is called makemkvcon

Nice script!
But i think there might be problems with the subtitles in relation to the video-format: afaik mkv-files cannot contain subs in vobsub-format and if you dump a video-stream (as vob) with mplayer there is no way to (de)activate the subs in it.
I can only second it..nice script.

MKV ...

Yeah, true...but this not exactly how mkvmerge works :)

Its more likes either raw streams (vobsub files, DTS, AC3, h264) and source MKV in order to output to target MKV.

Once you have arranged with this approach the workflow is pretty nicely, e.g. MakeMKV for BD Shrinking plus ffmpeg plus mkvmerge ...

Niclas,

you should add solved to your first posting.

but it did require pulling the subtitles out of the vob and then pushing them back into the mkv. Seems clunky, but that is apparently the way it works.

I am not shure what it clunky about extracting the subtitles from the output vob you ...

256MB for the GPU should be sufficient since I run XBMC on an old 256 MB raspi with 128MB for the GPU. Unless I am completely wrong an basic X environment should be sufficient. What I do not know is if VLC is of any use on a Raspi since it does not support hardware decoding from the GPU. The Raspi ...

At least under Windows certain versions of VLC had severe issues with certain MKV files.
I found SMPlayer a better option for playing back HD MKVs under Linux than VLC. YMMV....

You could try another version of VLC or remux the MKV with the MKVMerge GUI.
May be this helps.

Honestly even without problem I use a rather huge set of console tools, self-written scripts and GUI tools for my various burning work, since no tool incorporates all my needs.

Another may be stupid idea:
Why not try and burn your ISO with growisofs...
The is an example at the Backup to DVD Wiki entry on the syntax:
http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Backup_to_DVD

At least in commandline / bash you might get a speaking error message.

Hm, strange...
If you have an ISO you can usually burn it at every optical media (CD-R / DVD-R / BD-R) as long as the media is big enough for the ISO.
I have an external BD burner on which I burn HD MKVs files from time to time. Usually I master an ISO with UDF first by using ImgBurn under WINE and ...

The original soundtracks of Doom, Heretic and Hexen are MIDI songs and to my best knowledge thus are always depending on a working software MIDI synthesizer (e.g. Timidity). I haven't played any of them lately with MIDI songs though. For Doom I have used the available songs provided as add-on.

Thanks a lot for your detailed informations. IMO Tears of Steel is not really representative for 1080p stuff. :)
While it is h264-encoded and has a width of 1920, it only has a height of 800 pix which requires a lot less CPU power than a full 1080p movie does.

I am still unshure how this stuff ...
