For those people that are only now trying to apply Stephen Warren's patch, I had to insert the following line above the "epatch" line in the ebuild to get the patch to apply:

Code: Select all

   EPATCH_OPTS="-F 3 -l"

[SOLVED] Gnome3 crash between gdm and gnome-shell

I'm in the middle of doing a big upgrade on my system. Almost all packages are updated, so it's time to try gnome 3.2.

When I boot the laptop into gdm, and login as my user, gdm switches out, seemingly to start gnome, but then returns. I never see gnome.
If I login as root, gnome does start up ...

I'm not at all knowledgeable about this, but for some reason I had package masked 2.60b in favor of 2.60 because of "getting a signal 11" a long tiem ago. Might wanna try that.

Thanks, it's really cool! Though nobody in the linux world ever seems to finish a music player (referring to banshee, exaile, rhythmbox and many other goners).

0.1 is out in the meantime, you might want to update. Also, don't you have a layman overlay yet?

I'm still exploring it. How do I control ...

What alternatives do you use to make up for the missing udept?

I was mostly using dep -L and dep -l to analyse the (reverse) dependencies.

Unfortunately I update my laptop far too infrequently and so only find out about these deprecations a year or years after date. I'm gonna shed a tear :cry ...

You can use the same solution as with nautilus-root:

Code: Select all

sudo dbus-launch meld
I still think this is pretty shitty. I've always used meld in etc-update as root, and it just now stopped working. Some gnome dev should make multiple users in gnome pervasive.

@VoidMage The reason why pastebin is not a good idea either, is that if months later you lookup this thread to see what the problem was, if it is what you're running into, and how it was solved, that then pastebin by then already has deleted whatever you put on it. >-|

Ebuild installs properly and perfectly. I just get a black camera screen (which isn't all that surprising given the state of webcams on linux) in the Gmail settings. Audio works. No such errors in terminal.

How about this? Is this a feature or a bug? How to turn it on (you can turn off the border highlighting but not turn on the fields highlighting)?

I updated to OOo 3.0.0 (source build) today. It runs on par with any *.0.0 release as far as I can tell. I've seen it crash some and I can point out 5 trivial bugs already. But overall it's very decent and worth your compiling time. I was expecting a lot worse. I only expect an extremely stable ...

The difference of app-office/openoffice (non-bin) used to be that it was an adapted version by ximian. This meant it had custom icons and a better gnome integration. At the time (talking years back here) it surely was worthwhile. Apart from this surely some other perks I can't remember currently ...

I was trying:

Heh, that was quick. I was looking in the wrong direction.

The culprit is the "managed" option, that you had also and that I must have added when restoring the backup. Remove it (only that word) in your fstab and it's solved.

Thanks for the insight!

dmesg|tail or so

I should however get a successful automount here. When I try ...
