Could you move the drive to the another console along with a second monitor, then use the "SETUP > VIEW SYSTEM > VIEW MONITORS" to make it display on the second monitor instead of the first, with a view to switching it back?

Gentoo Portage never installs things into /usr/local , so anything in there was not installed by the Gentoo Portage tree. You probably need to ask your local system administrator what was put in there. ;) What is the output of find /usr/local/include /usr/local/lib -ls ?

The video drivers/modules are in /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/drivers.

Found the xorg.conf. It's not where I expected it to be. Kind of makes sense as it's generated by the software that runs the console and changes based on how many & what resolution screens are ...

That's a segmentation fault in the X server, but why is the video driver loaded from /usr/local/lib, when everything else is being loaded from /usr/lib?

Every once in a while X will log me and return me to the log in manager.
It's very rare and I've not noticed any pattern. I'm linking to my last two X log files below.

Ran 'make clean'.

Also did 'make mrproper' followed by 'make menuconfig'.

I changed one thing in the config (using menuconfig).
This kernel has complied previously.
If I go back to the previous .config I still get the error.
