I just reinstalled and same thing happened again.
Am I missing something or this stage is really messed up:
So: vaio ~ # rc-update show default
alsasound | default
consolekit | default
dbus | default
local | default
metalog | default
net.wlp5s0 | default
ntpd | default

Thanks for the clarification, I removed it from default.
Still had to add it to boot as it was not there tho.

It literally makes no sense.
I've wiped '/etc/runlevels/default/' out, rebooted, then created these again, rebooted again and now it works 8O
How it looks like now: vaio default # ls -l
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Aug 30 17:27 alsasound -> /etc/init.d/alsasound
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Aug ...

[Re-opened] Services added to default refuse to start

This is a fresh installation.
My default runlevel looks like this: vaio ~ # rc-update show default
alsasound | default
consolekit | default
dbus | default
local | default
metalog | default
net.lo | default
net.wlp5s0 | default
ntpd | default

Some of these I've added while I ...

ct85711, thanks. That pointed me in the right direction.
It was in fact xfce4-power-manager, but it turns out that since version 1.3.0 I have to include 'battery' in XFCE_PLUGINS. 1.2.0-r2 did not support that.

[SOLVED] Problems with sys-power/upower-pm-utils-0.9.23-r2

I'm using Xfce with OpenRC (hence - sys-power/upower-pm-utils). After emerging sys-power/upower-pm-utils-0.9.23-r2 a few days ago, my tray icon disappeared and no matter what I do - I cannot get it back. It was okay with the previous version (0.9.23).

xfce4-power-manager.xml looks okay (I changed ...

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

@NeddySeagoon, I did try a different cables and different ports - pretty much the same results.

[SOLVED] USB 3.0 external HDD problems

I have WD My Book Essential 3.0 USB disk and I've been having some problems with it.
I want to rule out other problems, before returning the drive as defective. Already tried a different USB cable and on a different port - same results.

This is a dmesg output from plugging the drive in, creating a ...

As in the other thread, this was confirmed as a glib bug. Patch is available as well:

I already managed to fix it by masking glib-2.38, latest glib-networking and latest gvfs.
However, to be able to leave portage in consistent state, gtk+ has to be rebuilt too.
The latest version that doesn't depend on glib-2.38 is gtk+-2.x. All the 3.x ones now want glib-2.38 :x
I'm thinking ...

Try using "dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1", which is, I think, the latest stable version of glib. It works for me.
How did you manage to do that?
I seem to be unable to downgrade.
I can see 2.36.4-r1 with eix:
Xecutor ~ # eix dev-libs/glib
[D] dev-libs/glib
Available versions:
(1) [m]1.2.10-r5

GRUB2 automatic fallback

Couldn't find it in the forum or wiki :?
What I want to achieve is to automate the fallback process in GRUB2.
e.g. scenario:
- I have 1 kernels (no initrd)
- the 2 default menu entries in grub (1 + 1 recovery)
- I've I add a 3rd menu entry in /etc/grub.d/40_custom, which tries to boot a non ...

For some reason I have no subtitles when playing videos with mplayer2/smplayer.
When starting it from CLI I see no errors. I can see the subtitle file being recognized in the player. However, I have no text output at all.
From the mplayer2 website:

I see we are making progress; there is a driver loaded but it ignores your mouse. I fails to see exactly why it does so. Here are some more ideas: You have InputClasses with overlapping match-criteria (the MatchDevicePath). You can make the InputClasses more specific with additional match criteria ...

My touchpad works okay though. It was working okay without any configuration, using evdev (but no special features, e.g. scrolling, tap-to-click etc.).
Had to configure it with Synaptics driver to add the special stuff.
