Hmm, rc8-zen1 was working fine, but for some reason the same config (make oldconfig'd) on rc9 crashes almost immediately with NX-bit or other assorted errors less than a half-second into the kernel booting process. It's on an i7 if that matters.

Edit: Fixed it. It was an 'early panic', still not ...

I look forward to it, I'd definitely love to move as much as possible over if it makes that big of a speed difference. Kind of disappointing that GCC can't keep up, hopefully it continues to optimize.

Possible to install alsa-driver-9999 from git?

The ebuild still references their old Mercurial repo, which hasn't been updated in over a year. I need something more recent as support for my Asus Xonar STX was just added 3 weeks ago to their git server. I've never done any heavy ebuild modification, but from what I can tell it won't be easy as ...

Heh, that's actually my bug page. Anyway, I've 'solved' it for now... gave up and am on RadeonHD. No 3d support sucks but at least I can start up X with this one, and resize windows at a decent rate (Though the window resize thing is definitely ATi's fault). Hopefully a fix for this is found ...

8.573 is the internal number from ATi, they're one in the same. Portage still uses the old numbering scheme which is impossible to remember, ATi now uses a much easier year.month scheme that the package maintainers have not yet adopted.

Anyway, yeah, they're straight through portage. Just different ...

Well, it didn't hurt. Same issue. Glad that that line isn't required anymore though, it was always a bit of a pain.

Unable to start X with fglrx 9.1 release

I'm not sure what changed with the newer releases, but ever since 8.12 I can't start X with fglrx. Over the last month I've tried the leaked 9.1, 9.2 and now the final 9.1 drivers straight from portage, and none of them seem to work properly, but I have no problems with the December drivers or ...

So, I guess I was in too much of a hurry yesterday (or was it lack of sleep?). I've been able to solve the problem, but the solution description won't make much sense if a more detailed situation description is not given. It would seem like a virtual/esd would be helpful here... a lot of older programs have an option for esound, which should be compatible with Pulseaudio, but the app will pull in esound if you remove it. If I remove the esound use flag, will it still work with Pulse?

I'm having a pretty similar issue with aoss32 on my amd64 system, I don't use realplayer though, my issue is with the new Penny-Arcade game, which also uses OSS. It works just going through my OSS emulation in the kernel, but that's kinda choppy and from what I hear aoss is a lot better... but I get ...

Works great, too bad it uses OSS. For some reason there's some weird split-second hitching that I don't get in Windows... it runs great for a few seconds then seems to drop a few frames. Probably some background process or something... what's the easiest way to debug something like that?

Edit: I ...

I'm also pretty interested in seeing this a little more production ready.... Fedora 9 uses it and it's pretty nice, I'd like to see it in my gentoo installs but it would be nicer if the ebuild could do more of this.

Edit: Nevermind, I was going based off of the guides... just added the java-overlay ...

Ok, fixed my issue with 'emerge -e gtk+', a few packages were updated and like 250 were rebuilt, so it's hard to tell what was causing it but it was either a broken package or the ebuild isn't properly updated for a dependency, it might need a higher version of something than the .ebuild asked for ...

Issues compiling gtk+

So, I haven't updated my laptop in a month or so and I go to give it a full update, and find that for some reason I cannot emerge gtk+ 2.12.5 or higher. I have an older version installed right now which I have not tried to recompile, but it was fine a while back. I've done a revdep-rebuild with no ...

Yeah, it does, but that means I need two different players for different filetypes - kind of ruins the point of an all-in-one media player. Plus, how am I supposed to play an avi/mkv file with wmv video and aac audio?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I'm wondering if there's any news on this. It kind of sucks not being able to play videos that use aac audio in mplayer. Are there any other ways to do it on amd64?

I've already tried the revdep-rebuild thing, didn't fix it. Also tried remaking my kernel and booting off that, no dice though. It seems to be a problem with a package, but I can't figure otu which one.

System locking up when shutting down...

So, a few days ago I set up a large emerge to update my system. The problem is that someone unplugged it and the battery died somewhere in the middle. For whatever reason, since then I'm having weird issues in KDE, and when I go to shut down it hangs on "Bringing down lo". So far I've done a full ...
