In the case that you are in a Intel+Nvidia setup, it is not necessary to load the nvidia module at all. You should blacklist it to avoid such problems during bootup.

# cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
blacklist nvidia

Then you could try to play that video file from the command line with mplayer and on the output look for something like "Detected file format". Once you know which codecs this video file requires just install the corresponding gst-plugin-* packages.

Being a .avi file odds are that gst-plugins-xvid is the missing piece.

Your problems arise because something tries to pull in xfce-base/libxfce4ui-4.9.2 which is on ~arch still. You should stick to xfce-base/libxfce4ui-4.8.1. Check your /etc/portage/package.keywords and related that could cause this pull.

What you see in your screenshot is the non-themed gtk interface. That usually happens with faulty gtkrc theme files, maybe due to a missing gtk engine or a wrong version of gtk for that specific theme.

You could try looking if that theme needs some gtk engine and install it. If the problem persists ...
