SOLVED!

It seems that when I moved my protage directory to a central server long ago the /etc/make.profile file still pointed to /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-1.4

Instead of the new location. So I updated the the symlink and everything's great once more.
I hope this helps someone.

Don't know why emerging perl and XML-Parser (when they were already installed) fixed it, but it did...

ok... deleted the ebuild and rsync'd, same problem... I then perused the search a bit deeper and tried this:

root@sauron# USE="" CFLAGS="mcpu=i686 -O2 -pipe" CXXFLAGS="mcpu=i686 -O2 -pipe" emerge sablotron

SAME thing...
funny thing is, my webserver was hacked into (wouldn't have happened if I ...

my last CFLAGS didn't have -mmmx or -msse, it was dumbed down as much as possible... (mcpu=pentium3 -O2 -pipe)... I even took out USE varibles and FEATURES.
And I also have done env-update after each edit...

I don't know what else to try... gonna delete the ebuild and rsync...

with or without distcc, same error message.
I also tried making some very vanilla CFLAGS (mcpu=pentium3 -O2 -pipe) and disabling all features.

still no dice...

but... I can /configure the binary just fine, when downloading the sablotron tarball... perhaps an issue with portage and this app?

Sablotron will not compile.

Ok... I have tried messing with my USE flags, and my C flags, here is the most "whitebread" CFLAGS that I can put up, and Sablotron will not compile. Here are the last few lines of the emerge attempt...
I searched for "sablotron" on the forum, saw a few issues with it not compiling, but none with ...

Hardcore bash warriors... why dosen't this work?

For awhile now, I have been trying to discover a way to get uptime to output in a standard format ... using /proc has seemed to be the most viable method... I found a script out there that was supposed to do this... but I get lots of errors... here is the script that I found on http://www.ocean.univ ...

can play wav/au files, no mp3 or sound in quake3

Ok... this is very bizarre.
For some reason, all of a sudden I have no sound in quake 3, or via xmms... I am using the default OSS drivers, because I was unable to get ALSA working. Quake 3 spams the following message "Dropping Sound" when I try to play... the wierd thing is, Gaim plays sound files ...

Why can't a user su to root?

For security reasons, users may only su to root if they belong to the wheel ...

ugly virtual desktops when switching resolutions

I am having a tough time getting my monitor to "sync" when I switch resolutions from 1024x768 to 800x600 or 640x480. In other words, I do not have a "virtual desktop larger than screen resolution" in 1024x768, but when I try to run at 800x600 or lower... anyreason why I am keeping the 1024x768 ...
