Holy crap! You obviously don't run Beryl...
Actually, Beryl on KDE runs great under knoppix and PCLinuxOS. I haven't tried it under Gentoo.

Or notice your emerge times.
I was running Windows for most of the time. For class notes, writting reports, and even photo editing, I noticed no slowness ...

mikb:
Have you, by any chance, recently upgraded the CPU on your mobo?
Yes. Yes I did. Apparently there's a gazillion different "AMD Athlon 64 Mobile 3200+" processors. I had the 82W clawhammer, and I wanted to go to 62W. Instead of getting the 62W Clawhammer, which is supported, I got the 62W ...

Thanks, RayDude. I took a look at that link you posted.

See this info.

In diagnosing the problem, as per the wiki, it seems that I don't have the particular problem that the wiki solves. My DSDT is compiled with the Intel compiler, and only ...

Hi Darez,

Your problem is the one discussed here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-558277.html

The Live discs don't contain any ATI drivers, for whatever reason. You'll have to edit your xorg.conf file to use the VESA driver instead. See the thread above for details.

I know the Live DVD ...

Not only is the ATI drivers missing from this release, the nVidia drivers are too.
Actually, Drarkanex, your problem with the nvidia drivers is slightly different from the ATI driver problem.

If you look in this directory:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
You will see that the driver, "nv_drv.so ...

Yep, as I had mentioned in the original post, it is possible to edit xorg.conf and use the VESA driver. That will get get the gui working well enough to run the installer. However, you don't get GLX capabilities, and it requires knowing what modifications to make. Perhaps it's a good introduction to ...

Thanks for your reply, Drescherjm.

Does ... acpi-cpufreq.ko exist?
yes, here's the cpufreq folder...
#ls
acpi-cpufreq.ko p4-clockmod.ko powernow-k8.ko speedstep-centrino.ko speedstep-lib.ko

What do you have as your CHOST in /etc/make.conf
Ah, you caught me. That was Knoppix. The same thing ...

mudrii:
why do you need gentoo liveCD when you could install gentoo with any other liveCD try knoppix 5.1.1 or any other live CD that works with ATI

It's true, mudrii, we DON'T need a Gentoo LiveCD. In fact, for the kind of installations I do, they're not useful. As long as they exist, though ...

I have a mobile AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (Newark, socket 754)

computer gives me:

FATAL: Error inserting powernow_k8 (/lib/modules/2.6.19/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/powernow-k8.ko): No such device

I am confident that I do have a processor in my laptop, and that the cpu supports frequency ...

Certainly the 2007.0 release is full of, well, "challenges" for us to solve. I'm not sure the best developers are going to pay much attention to a thread called "Gentoo 2007.0 is a buggy release", though. Let's take each issue and make a thread so they can be handled one at a time.

I've set one up ...

2007.0 LiveCD / LiveDVD ATI driver issues (i686 + AMD64)

I'm creating a thread to discuss one of the issues from the "Gentoo 2007.0 is a buggy release" thread (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-558042.html)

This affects both the i686 and AMD64 liveCDs and liveDVDs

Bug reports have been filed.
