No luck. I tried MAKEOPTS="-j1" and it just took longer to compile and failed at [17/29] with same error message "std::bad_alloc".

[UPDATE -- SOLVED] Not sure why the "emerge --sync gentoo" kept failing even after I had "rm -r /var/db/repos/gentoo/*" which should have sync'd a complete new tree. Anyhow, I gave emerge-webrsync a try to download a clean portage tarball and it worked without problems.

First, make sure printer is turned on and usb cable plugged in.
Shoud show up in "lpinfo -lv"
If not, add persistent udev rule to /etc/udev/rules.d/42-brother-ql700.rules

(change ATTRS{serial} number to match output of "lsusb -v" or "usb-devices"

# cat /etc/udev/rules.d/42-brother-ql700 ...

Originally after installing via rpm,
/usr/libexec/cups/filter/brother_lpdwrapper_ql700 was a symlink to /usr/lib64/cups/filter/brother_lpdwrapper_ql700
which in turn was a symlink to /opt/brother/PTouch/ql700/cupswrapper/brother_lpdwrapper_ql700 ...

I had it working with Brother's driver version 1.0.2-0 then one day it quit working. Not sure why.

We had a power failure and the system itself down when the battery of the SmartUPS ran down after an hour.

After starting the system, my soft (mdadm) RAID1 (mirror) drives didn't start properly.

For anybody who keeps /usr/portage on a separate Logical Volume ...
