In short: do not install both overlays on the same machine at the same time. Use one of them. Period.

If you happen to encounter an error with either one, feel free to join #gentoo-e on freenode,

I am using a selfmade ebuild for the equinox engine, since the equinox themes are the only ones I currently find bearable. Most darker/greysih themes are unusable, especially with Qt's gtk mode. Unfortunately it seems to be a dead end, too. Also it suffers from the same error.

To solve this issue, just patch it replacing "<glib/gtimer.h>" with "<glib.h>".

Thanks for solving this! Yesterday, before I read this thread, I thought about your solution, too, but I also thought "Nah, this is stupid."

Should have listened to my intuition. :D

This is the link to VIA binary drivers, they are not really open source and you need to ignore the fact that you dont find Gentoo on the list, just try to find a matching kernel and chipset. I never tried that myself. http://linux.via.com.tw/support/downloadFiles.action

You can also bug the guys ...

I own three different VIA boards/systems, they are all pretty easy to run/use, if you know the quirks.

Your board might be 64bit, try to boot from a 64bit livecd and if that works, go for a 64bit installation. The rest is pretty easy, just search your kernels "menuconfig" for via specific stuff ...

I think this is a BIOS issue. Did you set any "Critical Temperature" stuff in the BIOS? I guess this is a manufactures way of protecting the laptop from overheating damage.
I never had anything like this on any of the systems I owned.

Whoa, your python really is outdated -> dev-lang/python-2.7.2-r3 [2.4.4-r13]
You could try to merge a python 2.6 version as a temporary solution. Maybe this will satsify some of the packages now screaming for a 2.7 version.

Note that the following advices might lead to a non-working system, read up ...

Also, do I understand correctly, that antivir only segfaults on one of the two systems and doesnt on the other? And same with the fprot error? I currently have a similiar error with another app, but that happens on two of my boxes.

What I need to now is which config option in a probably stale configuration file causes the xdm init script to abort when it there is no running hal.

Mabye you did this already, but grep for hal in /etc/init.d (and /etc/conf.d, but I doubt that is the clue).

Use dispatch-conf, it is easier. But read up on it, this will happen a lot when you use gentoo. Almost every time you update a lot of packages.

I hear you! I also don't understand the obsession, as you call it. It is actually the first time I noticed that a working, stable feature is masked by removing the useflag from profile, when there is not even a security thread.

Since the global masking of hal useflag, you need to install eeze and e_dbus with udev useflag.

Again, ask in #gentoo-e on freenode, I am idling there 24/7 and you will get faster answers. I am not always browsing the forums.
