Hypnos, steveL thank you for answering.

So I need additional soundcard and a graphics card (preferably nvidia) that is supported by the kernel.

Do older cards even support DisplayPort which is recommended for 4K?

imo, you can install Gentoo without any doubt.

New Gentoo Installation

Hello,

I'm in the process of completing gear for a new PC and I was wondering, is Gentoo a good choice for a high-end desktop installation using i7@lga2011, ddr4, SSDs, 4K displays and so on?

Are there any other distros you'd recommend?

I'm running Gentoo for many years on server and desktop so ...

0 codecs loaded for your soundcard.
look here : http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6339697.html#6339697

Ok, so how do you explain the fact that:

ecasound -i tone,sine,880 -o alsa

produces a sound (tone) through alsa?

Plus, the same modules were loaded before the crash and no kernel update ...

Lost sound :(

Recently, while playing with variuos options with my microphone I think i broke some settings on my soundcard...

The thing here is if you untared python-2. 6 .4.tbz2 on /
then your /usr/bin/python and /usr/bin/python2 should be using python2.6 not python2.5

try resetting that symlink manually, at least for now.

# ls -l /usr/bin/python{,2}

True that, sys-apps/portage owns (/usr/lib/portage/pym/portage_selinux.py).

Why not grab both a dev-lang/python and sys-apps/portage from tinderbox and untar them on /
Check the /usr/bin/python symlink again.

Then post your emerge --info.

# ls -l /usr/bin/python
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 2010 ...

Yeah, that's a completely different problem as selinux isn't a standard module. You might be able to work around it by putting an empty selinux.py file in /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages, and then remerge portage (IIRC it includes the selinux module).

Find selinux.py returns nothing.

I never ...

I would definitely try what krinn said: cd /usr/bin
ln -s python2.6 python
rm python2
ln -s python2.6 python2
and try again: python -c "import os"

Tried that and....

Ok, get rid of that Python-2.6.4 folder, because it can interfere.
Also make sure that eselect python show = python2.6
and run python-updater

Make sure your python symlink is correct # eselect python set --python2 python2.6
eselect python list --python2
Did you remove that Python-2.6.4 folder from the previous repairs ?

Symlink:

You can also reset the profile (I think you use #1)

Code: Select all

eselect profile set --force 1
package.use is empty.

Code: Select all

# eselect profile set --force 1
#
Profile was already set to 1.

Maybe run revdep-rebuild also.

did you use the portage-2.1.6 distfile?

Mike, is version actually works.

Now, as my system is 'slightly' out of date, what should I (re-)emerge to fix the problem? Python then revdep ...

Please post your emerge --info . Given the last message, I assume you messed with a selinux install / profile.

I'm afraid, emerge doesn't work at all:
