Gentoo and plymouth

Hello all,

I was wondering what everyone else's experience with plymouth under Gentoo is. As I've spent a few hours trying to get it to work, but it just refuses to work.

Configuration
- Gentoo Linux (17.0 profile) with UEFI systemd (/dev/sda1 = /boot = FAT32, /dev/sda2 = swap, /dev=sda3 ...

This sometimes just happens with an upgrade of a package. I've seen it several times before, especially with Firefox. I don't exactly know why. I'm glad it's solved though.

P.S.: There is a Russian forum in case you need support in Russian ;)

What is the output of "firefox-bin -v" after these actions? Is that the same? What happens if you unmerge the current package and emerge an older version manually by masking the new version?

Try the following:

- Rename the .mozilla folder using mv as root
- Login as user
- Try starting Mozilla Firefox

If Mozilla Firefox starts, import your bookmarks and settings if required from the old profile. I've seen similar issues before with other programs that an upgrade caused a user profile ...

Did you recently update any of the other packages? It might be related to a dependency it is normally compiled against, though you'd expect the binary packages to have static libraries so that they'd have no dependencies. The advice is to try building the source version to see what it does.

I've tried messing around with Intel Software RAID myself in both RAID-1 and RAID-0 on a variety of Linux systems, but never got it to work in a stable situation.

My advice:Use Linux software RAID, as it works much more reliably and stable then Intel RAID. If you update your UEFI / BIOS image or ...

Did you set any Java arguments? Could be cause because of invalid memory allocation.

You stated that you have a Sandy Bridge Processor? Then it could be your Java version. Try using a Oracle Java Runtime Environment version below 8.0 Update 60, might be a security risk, but will likely resolve ...

A few questions to get this issue clearer:

- Is support for swap and FAT filesystems compiled into your kernel?
- Are dosfstools installed?

What happens if you remove /boot and swap from the fstab? Does it still throw an error then?

Could you post the output of print from parted or output from ...

What I'd advise first of all is making a backup of your system (snapshot or clone).

- Then what you need to do is set your profile (using eselect set profile) to a none systemd profile
- Then change your USE flags and change systemd to -systemd.
- Then you should use emerge -pve system to check ...

The I210 uses e1000 AFAIK. For Intel you should usually compile e1000, e1000e and igb. If your kernel is recent enough it will be automatically detected and work OOTB (Out Of The Box), since Intel cards work generally really well on Linux.

Can you show us your partition layout using cfdisk or a print from parted, then we'd be able to provide you with steps to undertake to resolve the issue. The point is that a GPT partition always needs a partition to be a FAT32 formatted partition and needs to be at least 128MB in size. Also see ...

I've read that genkernel-next should work too (for building a systemd compatible initrd). So I think I'll make use of that in combination with EFIStub for booting and mdraid (Linux software RAID) for my RAID-1 set-up. Thank you for your help so far, I'll give it a go :)

Hello all,

I recently wanted to install Gentoo on my new server, but I noticed there was no profile in the portage for a hardened system with systemd. Which profile should I use if I want to use a hardened profile with systemd? Should I use the hardened profile or the regular systemd profile? If so ...

Try pressing the F keys to see what options are available on your LiveDVD. There might be an option for it, I'm not quite sure though, because this can differ. What LiveCD / LiveDVD are you using? Have you tried booting from another LiveCD or LiveDVD?

This can easily be solved by configuring the hostname above and editing /etc/hosts by including both the FQDN and the hostname like this:

Once done, reload net.lo or reboot and it should give you:

"laptop01.example.local" once you try to login the next ...
