I was wondering what everyone else's experience with plymouth under Gentoo is. As I've spent a few hours trying to get it to work, but it just refuses to work.

Configuration
- Gentoo Linux (17.0 profile) with UEFI systemd (/dev/sda1 = /boot = FAT32, /dev/sda2 = swap, /dev=sda3 ...

This sometimes just happens with an upgrade of a package. I've seen it several times before, especially with Firefox. I don't exactly know why. I'm glad it's solved though.

What is the output of "firefox-bin -v" after these actions? Is that the same? What happens if you unmerge the current package and emerge an older version manually by masking the new version?

Try the following:

- Rename the .mozilla folder using mv as root
- Login as user
- Try starting Mozilla Firefox

Did you recently update any of the other packages? It might be related to a dependency it is normally compiled against, though you'd expect the binary packages to have static libraries so that they'd have no dependencies. The advice is to try building the source version to see what it does.

- Is support for swap and FAT filesystems compiled into your kernel?
- Are dosfstools installed?

What happens if you remove /boot and swap from the fstab? Does it still throw an error then?

Is your user a member of the video group? Did you try removing vesa and fb from your Xorg.conf file if you have one? As it seems to try and load it.

What I'd advise first of all is making a backup of your system (snapshot or clone).

- Then change your USE flags and change systemd to -systemd.

The I210 uses e1000 AFAIK. For Intel you should usually compile e1000, e1000e and igb. If your kernel is recent enough it will be automatically detected and work OOTB (Out Of The Box), since Intel cards work generally really well on Linux.

Can you show us your partition layout using cfdisk or a print from parted, then we'd be able to provide you with steps to undertake to resolve the issue. I've read that genkernel-next should work too (for building a systemd compatible initrd). So I think I'll make use of that in combination with EFIStub for booting and mdraid (Linux software RAID) for my RAID-1 set-up. Thank you for your help so far, I'll give it a go

Could you provide some more information?
- Is the COM port on your motherboard or is it a USB to serial converter?
- Did you configure your kernel and character devices properly?
- Did you install the firmware package?

Try pressing the F keys to see what options are available on your LiveDVD. There might be an option for it, I'm not quite sure though, because this can differ. What LiveCD / LiveDVD are you using? Have you tried booting from another LiveCD or LiveDVD?

Tried using a 2048-bit private RSA key?

Could you try connecting your PC or laptop directly to the server (thus without any switch or router) between it using a cross-over cable and test it? This way you can be sure that it's not a switch or router which is interfering.

This can easily be solved by configuring the hostname above and editing /etc/hosts by including both the FQDN and the hostname like this:

127.0.0.1 laptop01.example.local laptop01

Once done, reload net.lo or reboot and it should give you:

"laptop01.example.local" once you try to login the next ...

gstreamer never worked for me either. It never produced any sound output on my Lenovo ThinkPad T61p laptop. Switching to xine-lib has always fixed that issue for me.
