High resolution consoles with ATi Radeon 9800 Pro

Hi,

I was fiddling around with the framebuffer support options in the kernel (2.6.8.1 vanilla) and I don't seem to succeed getting a hi res text console in gentoo (console which displays a funny little tux in the upper left part of the screen in a display resolution bigger than 640x480). The next best thing I managed to do was gettng a blank screen in all text consoles. X was working fine.

What are the proper procedures getting hires textconsoles working in gentoo with a radeon 9800?

Browsed a lot of forum's and googled my ass off. Not a clue. Guess you're my last hope :P

Hi,

I think some things are important:
You must remove vesafb from the kernel and compile in radeonfb (new driver).

And this is my cmdline for grub:
root=/dev/hdb3 acpi=force noapic gentoo=nodevfs splash=silent,theme:default video=radeonfb:1280x1024-32@75 console=tty0

This works for me with a ATI radeon 9800Pro, kernel 2.6.9-rc2-mm3

Hope this helped you.

You might have to use the vesa framebuffer instead. The radeonfb driver and the ATI fglrx driver will often conflict with each other and it can cause screen corruption and total lockups when shutting down X or switching between X and a console. It doesn't always happen though, so give the radeonfb driver a shot first.
