From what I read the game is hardcoded at 60 fps, so it either runs at your detail levels or it won't run at all. So its more of a matter will your card run their lowest gfx settings or not.

And honestly I think we just need to see what they say the min reqs are. I don't know.

Most definetly won't work, minimum compatible graphics card is a Geforce 3 or Geforce 4 MX, just upgrade the card - with the new cards out now from ati and nvidia, the old ones are dirt cheap.

Damn it! Well if this is true... I guess I must upgrade my hardware.... which will include a new mother board (for the agp support) and a new graphics card... So let's see...Maybe I could get away with spending... $170? Oh well It'll be well worth it!

The last time id talked about minimum requirements they said a Geforce 1 but that you'd have to play it at a very low resolution.

a g2 64mb is as fast as a g4 mx, but it might rely on some hardware features you dont have.

I'd wait and try ;), or decide on a good card to buy and go get that if it doesn't work ;)

I agree with him. There certainly have been improvements in ogl since your card came out and that will most likely be the larger factor in playing it, i you have all the features they use in your card (per example I once went to play a game on my older machine and it wouldn't run because it didn't have pixel shader 1.1 in it, not because it was too slow).

With that said, if it does run it will not be at high detail settings, but it will be at a guaranteed frame rate (much like nerverwinter nights).

I was able to run Doom3 leaked alpha 0.02 a 10-20FPS on Geforce2 GTS 64Mb.
You can get it running so that you can play it, but it will look like a quake2 in software mode.
If you want you can configure it easily to 5-10FPS and it will look like quake3 with extra ordinary lightning and textures.
My Guess for Doom3 minium demainds would be something like Geforce2, 1GHZ AMD and 256Mb DDR.
Of course I will sooner or later buy 2,2GHZ A64 3200+, 1GtDDR and PCX GeForce6800Gt :P To play doom3 at max graphics settings...

Otherwise it won't be doom3 :D

You need a Geforce3 and a >1GHZ CPU to be happy playing this game. I'm in the same boat with the video card, I've got a Geforce2 GTS 64mb. Actually, it's faster than the Geforce4MX and has the same features. (Geforce2 and Geforce4MX Lines don't have pixel shaders...)

I'm happy they are putting a linux port out, but I'll be buying the game regardless for windows...it just looks awesome.

I plan on saving for a 9800 Pro though, seems the best way to go. I'm a little scared on ati's support in linux though...I wish nvidia had a comparable alternative for the price...

It's the Tick Rate, not the FPS which is capped.

The internal tick rate that handles stuff like physics calculations has been capped hard at 60 ticks per second, to level the playing field, in spite of differing hardware. It also makes syncing physics in MP games much easier.

The FPS can go as high or low as you computer can take.

Quake 2 was like this except it was capped at 10fps internally which was a bad decision at the time. 60 should be fine though.

Capping this will stop weird things like physics anomalies at really high fps like the "jump bug" if you want to call it that in Q3.

why doom 3 will be good?
because there are a lot of new graphical stuff in it

maybe you can run it turning all off... but them would be better you play otherthing that stay more 'beautiful' in your card i guess...

Technically it will run on a geforce 1 you'll just have to play it at a really low resolution, maybe as low at 320x240.

Any serious gamer these days should have 1GB of ram, it really does make a big difference over 512MB in some games, mainly loading times.

No. You're fucked unless you get a job. Me, I'm going to have to upgrade my GeFarce4 440MX if I want to enjoy Doom 3.
...and a happy fuckin' Solstice to you too, man!

Trust me, don't buy that, unless you plan to play on windows. It's really the worse way to go. Buy a 5900 xt or nothing.

A Geforce 6800 is also a good option, goes for about $300usd and it's a lot faster then a 5900XT which go for around $190usd. Just depends on how much you want to spend I guess.

If you want the best card on the market nothing beats the GeForce 6800's on Windows or Gnu/Linux.

This site has the system requirements for Doom 3. You need a 1.5 Ghz processor if you want to play it!

Well I know ati support is lacking... Do you have any links which describe the performance, or any major issues? I looked here:
http://www.xig.com/Pages/Atop/SummitBen ... CARDS.html

and the performance of the ati binary driver looked "ok" when compared to windows. Of course that's with quake 3...

Anyone have anything conclusive?

Thanks,

poorman

Well I guess I must upgrade my card... I was thinking along the lines of http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 068&depa=0 or http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 200&depa=0 Will this be enough? I'm guessing I might need something a little bit better... I was going to buy the FX 5200 128MB DDR AGP card from a friend, but I heard they are terrible in performance, and that the GeForce4 can out perform them. I'd like a solution under 70-80 bucks...if there is one, that'll let me play Doom 3 nicely.
