I bet the HW vendors are happy. iD always seems to generate a boatload of upgrades! :-p. May need to invest in one myself.

I guess it will be out in the US first hm?
Will there be two versions? One for Windows and one for Linux or will they ship a patch or something like that to just use the data files from the Windows installation?
It would be nice to have both on one disc of course.

But I guess I cannot play it under Linux anyway because of the slow ATI drivers :(

according to id software's plan update the are not planning to ship retail version with linux binaries. they promised to release a linux binary for download 'real soon' after the game is sold. i hope 'real soon' is not so vague like 'when its done'. maybe we should encourage them a little more by telling them we want it instantly? ;-)

Actually, we should ask to be able to buy a Linux version of the game. That way they'd be able to truly see that Linux gamers are out here and they pay for games when the games are good.

I don't know, i think we are lucky to even have a linux version planned, i would not want to push my luck by demanding them we want it instantly! :P

Shipping a seperate box for linux is really not feasible for them. Shipping it in the same box is but this way they will know for sure how worthwhile supporting the linux community is when their servers get swamped with downloads. This way they can keep count too.

Eventually more companies will include linux versions in the box hopefully, but right now we just need to get more companies making linux binaries period.

let's be happy with what they are getting and make sure they know we appreciate it and support Doom3.

I agree with GenKreton.

When it is finally out and we can play it in linux we should make sure to let ID know that we really appreciate their efforts in making a linux binary as they always did :)

I think ID is not only the pioneer in FPS creation but also in linux game support :)

Does anyone know if this game is 100% OpenGL? Is it built on the new spec or did they have to use DirectX to make use of vertex shaders and the like?

NVidia and ATI have their own OpenGL extensions in OpenGL so be assured that it will look the same.
Mr Carmack made rendering pathes for all the major gfx cards afaik.

Even in windows DX is only used for sound and input but not for 3D.

I remember that I read an article where M$ tried to persuade Mr Carmack to use Direct3D for his future engines but he kindly refused :)

Like I said before, lets make sure that we let him know how much we appreciate it.

Carmack helped create DirectX, but he still refuses to use Direct3D, I think mostly because it was supposedly his idea that OpenGL should have been used for the graphics part of DirectX, which would have made life a lot easier for people not using MS platforms.

So, naturally, MS didn't follow that idea.
