Icculus Q2: OpenGL & Sound Problems

  • Quote

Post by njlg » Mon Jan 19, 2004 6:59 pm

Maybe it has been a long time since I played Quake2 with OpenGL. But when I founded my Quake2 cd I thought I would try out Icculus' Q2 engine. Now I have several problems (which no one else seems to have):

Is this OpenGL? No matter what video drivers I select, except softx, the game always looks like this.
Image
You can see more, larger images at http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~ngreenha/quake2/.

I am not sure why I need aRts to have sound. Does anyone know if there is a way to setup the sound a different way?

Code: Select all

------- sound initialization -------
aRts: can't connect to aRts soundserver
sound sampling rate: 11025
------------------------------------
EDIT: Does anyone know how I can get the img thing to work?

I can't tell from the images if it's OpenGL or not, but you should be able to see that in the console after starting up. If you don't know what to look for, please paste the output in this thread. (Use condump to save it to a file)

About arts, if you have the 'arts' use flag in make.conf, everything will be built with support for it when available. If you're not using arts anyway you should remove the arts use flag. I think in this case it is SDL (libsdl) that was built with arts support, so you'd have to rebuild that after removing the flag.

Quake2 sound needs OSS drivers or at least alsa-OSS emulation. Which will not work unless your soundcard supports hardware mixing.
So if you have an intel8x0 you will have to install OSS drivers...

Oh, okay. Well I was using the OpenGL driver to play the game. I just remember OpenGL being really amazing in this game.

Code: Select all

------- Loading ref_glx.so -------
LoadLibrary("/usr/games/lib/quake2-icculus/ref_glx.so")
ref_gl version: GL 0.01
Using libGL.so for OpenGL...
Initializing OpenGL display
...setting fullscreen mode 3: 640 480
Now about aRts. I have arts installed along with KDE. But since I switched to fluxbox, I have emerge unmerge kde (which I guess just removes all related packages from my world file, but keeps everything on my system). Arts has never been a flag in my make.conf. But maybe KDE just being on my system caused the flag to get added? I will try to recompile and see if that gets me anywhere.

Also, (I guess I left this out in my first post) when I choose VIDEO from the menu, the whole game quits out. Is this just my copy or is this normal?

I've been using version 0.13 which is labelled as still buggy but I managed to finish the single player mission without noticing any bugs...

You need to change the owner and group since you probably copied the cd files as root.

Code: Select all

chown -R games /usr/share/games/quake2
chgrp -R games /usr/share/games/quake2

I started to emerge quake2-icculus, but noticed a lot of references to /usr/kde/3.1. I quit and had to do

Code: Select all

# USE="-arts" emerge quake2-icculus
which got the sound working (though due to alsa, is not very good =).

blueworm, I have never noticed any problems with the single player game play (though I've only played it to the second level several times). Just for good measure I chown/chgrp'd the quake2-data files.

The video-menu option may be due to my nvidia card.

Are you sure you have -arts in your use flags? If so, check if there isn't "arts" in there as well.

I have also had this problem. It segfaults as soon as you press a key after leaving the video menu.

What you should try is to use the sdlquake2 executable instead of the quake2 executable.

ALSA in Quake 2!

  • Quote

Post by Mekoryuk » Wed Jan 28, 2004 5:39 am

Never fear folks! Brendan Burns 'n Co. are working on getting true ALSA support into Quake 2!

Just head on over to http://www.icculus.org/quake2/ and scroll down to the bottom of the page for CVS. Check out HEAD, not the R_015 tag.

*and the crowd goes wild!*
